Michael Phelps is entered in the 100m butterfly and the 200m freestyle at the second meet of his comeback, the Arena Grand Prix at Charlotte next week, according to The Associated Press.
Phelps’ longtime coach, Bob Bowman, said he’s not certain Phelps will swim both races, which both fall on May 16, according to the AP.
The 22-time Olympic medalist swam for the first time since the London Olympics at a Grand Prix event in Mesa, Ariz., last week. There, Phelps finished second to Ryan Lochte in the 100m butterfly and swam butterfly again in a 50m freestyle preliminary heat. He was also originally entered in the 100m free but dropped it.
“We were encouraged by his performances in Mesa and look forward to trying a 200 in Charlotte,” Bowman told the AP in a text message. Phelps made the 2012 Olympic Team in the 200m free but dropped it for the London Olympics.
Phelps is expected to head to Colorado for a high-altitude training camp after the Charlotte meet. He is also entered in the following Grand Prix event, in Santa Clara, Calif., from June 19-22.
The U.S. Championships are Aug. 6-10 in Irvine, Calif., a selection meet for the biggest events of the next two years, the Pan Pacific Championships later in August in Australia and the 2015 World Championships in Kazan, Russia.
