Ryan Lochte, an 11-time Olympic medalist, will swim at the World Short Course Championships in Doha, Qatar, in December, headlining the U.S. team announced Thursday.
Lochte is joined by 12-time Olympic medalist Natalie Coughlin and London Olympic champions Tyler Clary and Matt Grevers (full roster here).
The World Short Course Championships are held in a 25-meter pool, as opposed to the Olympic size 50-meter pool.
Michael Phelps, Missy Franklin and Katie Ledecky will not swim at the World Short Course Championships. Phelps hasn’t contested the biennial event since 2004, Franklin since 2010 and Ledecky has never competed at short course Worlds.
Lochte, 30, dominated the 2010 and 2012 World Short Course Championships, winning seven medals (six golds) in 2010 and eight medals (six golds) in 2012.
Lochte won three medals (one gold) at the Pan Pacific Championships in August, his lowest medal total at a major international long course meet since 2006.
Lochte’s good friend, Cullen Jones, is among Olympic relay gold medalists on the short course Worlds team, along with Claire Donahue, Conor Dwyer, Breeja Larson, Matt McLean, Nick Thoman and Shannon Vreeland.
Also on the roster is two-time Olympian Katie Hoff, who came back to swimming this year after missing the London Olympic team but was ill at the U.S. Championships and did not make the Pan Pacs team.
