Usain Bolt will not race again this season, pulling out of his last meet scheduled for Thursday.
Bolt, who raced at three competitions this year after getting a late start due to foot surgery, will rest and resume training in October, according to a press release from the Zurich meet.
“His coach Glen Mills is satisfied with his performances in the three competitions he took part in, but feels it is now time to shut it down while he is healthy and injury free with a view on his preparations for the 2015 season,” the press release said. “He will now take a period of rest, do some sponsor activities and then resume training in October.”
Bolt anchored the Jamaican 4x100m relay team to Commonwealth Games gold on Aug. 2, ran 10.06 seconds in a 100m on a Brazilian beach last Sunday and then 9.98 in Poland on Saturday. He did not race at all over 200m.
The season’s best of 9.98 is Bolt’s slowest since 2007, before he broke his first world records and won the first three of his six Olympic titles in 2008.
“Usain’s body has delivered tremendous performances over the last years,” Zurich meet director Patrick Magyar said in the press release. “But, it is a body and not a machine. If an athlete of that level and his coach feel more rest is needed, we are certainly not going to question this and fully support this decision.”
