In a tournament where young stars have already made their marks, a couple of classics led Brazil to a World Cup win.
Thirty-seven year-old Formiga became the oldest player to score in a Women’s World Cup, also winning a penalty kick that 29-year-old Marta finished to give Brazil its 2-0 win over Korea Republic on Tuesday in Montreal.

Marta’s goal was her 15th Women’s World Cup goal, moving her past retired German star Birgit Prinz and into sole possession of first place on the WWC goal scoring list. USWNT legend Abby Wambach is third, with 13.Marta breaks the World Cup goal-scoring record on a PK. A bit anticlimactic, but incredible history. That’s 15 goals in 15 WWC games.

Formiga opened the scoring when she latched onto one of the worst back passes you’ll see, easily pushing the ball past Kim Jungmi to make it 1-0.
That was the score at halftime, and stood until Cho Sohyun took down Formiga to win Marta’s penalty chance in the 53rd minute. Formiga also matched Japan’s Homare Sawa by appearing in her sixth World Cup.
Brazil will next face Spain on June 13, which drew South Korea’s next opponents, Costa Rica, 1-1.
For those wondering, Formiga’s mark is not a record for both genders. Cameroon’s Roger Milla scored against Russia at age 42 in the 1994 tournament.
