It’s been an eventful couple of weeks for the Columbus Crew. Word came down about 10 days ago of a momentous sale as the Hunt family handed over control following 17 years in charge of one of Major League Soccer’s original clubs.
Then this week marked the one-year anniversary of tragic death of rookie midfielder Kirk Urso.
A chance to get back on the field was also a chance for the Crew to kick its way back into the playoff race, a big goal for a team that had lost six of its last seven in league play.
A big, big 2-0 win over New York will go a long way to restoring some good feeling around Crew Stadium.
It was a fairly dominant win, as well, as the Crew controlled matters against the Eastern Conference leaders, who have been way too inconsistent this year, sometimes looking like threats to win it all and sometimes looking like a team that could struggle just to make the post-season.
It was just about this time last year that a telling Columbus surge nearly produced enough to get the men in yellow into the playoffs. Federico Higuain propelled that dash – and a few more moments of magic like his second goal delivery Saturday could perhaps do something similar this year.
Watch his classy finish in the second half as he spots Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles cheating just a little too far out of goal. It’s a delicate, clever and highly technical finish from the Crew playmaker.
