David Luiz ruled out vs. Ecuador with damaged knee cartilage

Italy v Brazil: Group A - FIFA Confederations Cup Brazil 2013

David Luiz won’t perform when his country, Brazil, takes on Ecuador in an international friendly match on Tuesday.

The Paris Saint-Germain defender succumbed to an unfortunate scenario, with cartilage damage in his left knee occurring during a 1-0 win over Colombia on Friday.

The Brazilian Football Confederation’s statement on their website today: “David Luiz suffered an injury to the cartilage of the patella in his left knee during the game against Colombia, and is unable to play on Tuesday [against] Ecuador. The player did tests, under the assistance of the Brazilian team, who observed the clinical diagnosis made by the medical doctor.”

The absence of Luiz won’t bolster new manager Dunga’s chances. Following the shocking 7-1 defeat at the hands of Germany in the World Cup semifinals, he looks to have Brazil enjoy victory against solid CONCACAF opponents, but Thiago Silva suffered hamstring issues in pre-season. So, Canarinho will strive for a favorable result without a back line at full health.

Neymar, who netted the game-winner vs. Columbia, replaced Silva as captain and will continue to occupy that post.
