Steven Gerrard once called Frank Lampard “too good for the L.A. Galaxy.” If an Italian report is true, Gerrard might not value himself quite that much.

Respected Italian journalist Gianluca DiMarzio is reporting that the Los Angeles Galaxy have made a contract offer to Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, who will be out of contract with the Reds this summer.

Gerrard has been linked with North American destinations from Toronto to the NASL’s New York club, but would certainly fit the reigning champion Galaxy, who lost Landon Donovan to retirement.

It could be a bit of a “foot in mouth” moment for Gerrard if true. When Frank Lampard reportedly turned down the Galaxy in 2013, Gerrard said the following.

“Of course he made the right choice. He was too good for LA Galaxy in my opinion,” the England captain said. “Everyone saw how good he was at the end of last season for Chelsea.”

“Of course I would have supported his decision if he had decided to go to LA Galaxy, but for me he still had a lot to offer in the Premier League and certainly for England. I would have been sad if he had moved away because he is a great player.”

Gerrard, of course, would be a major coup for Major League Soccer, regardless of age. Imagine the possibilities of Lampard vs. Gerrard in MLS (although both sides of that story carry uncertainty now).

What do you think? Will Gerrard leave for MLS to play with Gyasi Zardes (the poor man’s Raheem Sterling)? Or is he more likely to head to the East Coast, or stay in England? In any event, there were earlier rumors of Gerrard making a future announcement tomorrow, with the Premier League on break until next weekend (aside from weekend FA Cup games).
