After being tipped to start the match by manager Luciano Spalletti on Friday, Spalletti omitted his captain from the teamsheet completely after conducting a controversial interview with Italian media.

Totti spoke out against Spalletti in an interview with RAI, claiming his recent lack of playing time was his manager’s decision and that he “can’t stay like this” after his contract expires in June.

Spalletti took over the Roma job in mid-January after Rudi Garcia was sacked. Since then, Totti has featured in just two matches, both as a second-half substitute.

Now 39-years-old, Totti made his debut for Roma at the age of 16 and is the club’s all-time leader in appearances and goals scored.
