Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez suffered an upper body injury in Mexico’s Wednesday friendly against Honduras, and his Gold Cup is now in serious jeopardy.

With El Tri’s best defender gone for the tournament, one of its more prolific goal scorers could join him. Hernandez fell hard on his arm while handling the ball after a foul, and the awkward motion caused an injury that removed him from the game.

Doc Meraz, a physician associated with ESPN, said the injury looked like a clavicle ailment that generally keeps players out for 2-3 weeks. But that’s obviously not confirmed. It could be better, or much worse (dislocated shoulder, broken collarbone, etc.), and ESPN reported from Azteca that it’s a fractured clavicle.

Mexico’s group matches are July 9, 12 and 15, though the nation is fortunate to be in one of the softer groups. Trinidad & Tobago, Guatemala and Cuba round out the quartet.

The Gold Cup semifinals are three weeks from tonight, with the final on July 26 in Philadelphia.

UPDATE: It could be quite bad.
