No team has been able to slow down Real Madrid this season.

Now the opposition will have some help.

Star midfielder James Rodriguez is set to miss two months after undergoing foot surgery in Madrid today. He picked up the injury in Real’s 2-1 win over Sevilla yesterday, and will now face a long spell on the sidelines.

Real Madrid released a short statement today regarding James’ surgery.

Real Madrid’s James Rodríguez has undergone surgery on the fracture he suffered in the fifth metatarsal in his right foot. The operation was a complete success and was carried out by Doctor Mariano de Prado under the supervision of Doctor Jesus Olmo, the Real Madrid C. F. doctor.”

While recovering from injury, James will miss a few vital matches for Real. He will miss this weekend’s derby with Atletico Madrid, and could be out for El Clasico against Barcelona and Real’s Champions League round of 16 match against FC Schalke.

For any team not named Real Madrid, losing a player of James’ quality would be devastating to the club. However, Madrid has a bench of substitutes that could very well compete in La Liga as their own side.
