Jose Mourinho to appeal ban, fine for meltdown

Jose Mourinho is in trouble again with the FA but he’s not going to accept this latest charge without a fight.

On Wednesday, Mourinho was handed a suspended one-match stadium ban and a $75,000 fine for claiming that referees are “afraid” to give Chelsea decisions following their 3-1 defeat to Southampton.

The reigning Premier League champions are currently in 16th place after eight games of the season, already losing four times so far and Mourinho described the charge from the FA as “an absolute disgrace” on Thursday before confirming to reporters at Chelsea’s Cobham training ground on Friday morning that he intends to appeal the decision to fine and suspend him.

“The moment we got the written reasons and we decided to appeal is the moment to stop with my opinions and not to add anything more,” Mourinho said.

Mourinho, 52, has come under a torrent of criticism already this season as his star players have failed to get going, plus his handling of the Eva Carneiro situation -- he publicly criticized Carneiro and another member of the medical team, Jon Fearn, during Chelsea’s opening day 2-2 draw with Swansea as they rushed onto the pitch to treat Eden Hazard -- as the head of the medical staff has now left the club.

Let’s see how far Mourinho gets with the FA. One suspects his fine could be increased and his suspended one-match stadium ban could turn into an immediate one or two game stadium ban. Longer-term, are we going to see less outrageous comments from Mourinho? If he continues to get fined and sanctioned, his charismatic and controversial comments may well become a thing of the past. Then again, this is Mourinho we are talking about.
