Mexican national team coach Miguel Herrera has banned his players from drinking alcohol and having sex, among other things during the World Cup, in an interview with Mexican paper Reforma.
Saying, “we’re not going to a party,” Herrera is clearly taking things very seriously as his country’s squad looks to bounce back from a very tough qualifying round in which they came seconds from not qualifying for the tournament at all.
“If a player can not endure a month or 20 days without having sex, then you are not prepared to be a professional,” Herrera said. “Let’s play a World Cup, we’re not going to a party.”
Ok then.
Comments like this make you wonder, what exactly were the players doing to cause the manager to set these rules in the first place, let alone go public with them?
Well...drinking alcohol and having sex, I guess.
Their World Cup group, Group A, appears to be the “No Fun Party.” Brazilian manager Luis Felipe Scolari also banned his team from having “acrobatic sex.” The group includes Mexico, Brazil, Croatia, and Cameroon. No word from the other two teams whether they will let their players romp around Brazil in an uncontrollably sexual manner.
Look out when Brazil and Mexico play each other on June 17, there could be plenty of frustration taken out on the Castelão pitch.
It’s unclear exactly when Herrera plans to begin enforcing his rules. Mexico plays a home warm-up match against Israel next Wednesday before taking on Portugal, Bosnia, and Ecuador in the United States.
