Less than 24 hours after reports leaked that 2015 will see Steven Gerrard transfer to a club in Major League Soccer, The Telegraph is reporting that Brendan Rodgers is already looking to take the midfielder back on loan in 2016.

The 34-year-old confirmed earlier today that he will move his family to America this summer to take up post at a MLS side located in New York or Los Angeles. The New York Red Bulls, New York City Football Club and Los Angeles Galaxy are reportedly all in discussions with Gerrard to secure his signature.

But, as the MLS season spans from March to early December, a short-term loan to the Premier League in January remains a viable option and, according to journalist Chris Lascombe, Liverpool intend on trying to exercise it.

Whether or not Gerrard is interested in exercising a similar route, only time will tell. During today’s pressers, however, Liverpool noted how Thierry Henry trained at Arsenal before becoming a short-term signing while David Beckham took a similar path joining AC Milan on winter loan spells in 2009 and 2010.

For American soccer fans, this is the last thing they need to hear following Frank Lampard’s decision to retreat (at least temporarily) on a deal he had allegedly made to join New York City Football Club. But the truth is, news of Liverpool’s desire to snap up Gerrard on loan is a red herring that Americans would do well to let roll off their back.

Yep, the structure of the MLS season naturally brings short-term loan deals into play and Gerrard, being a Liverpool legend, will always have carte blanche to walk through the gates at Anfield. Thanks, Captain Obvious!
