Lionel Messi has evolved into an absolute superstar on the world stage of soccer, noted as the best player in the world by may experts.

The Barca star was brought into the club’s youth system from Newell’s Old Boys back in 2000, and from that point on, the figure that is Messi evolved into his exceptional talent we see today.

Current Russia head man and former Juventus boss Fabio Capello recently stated that he attempted to convince Frank Rijkaard, Barcelona’s manager from 2003-2008, to allow Messi loan time in Serie A. This inquiry came during a Gamper Trophy match, where the Argentine had tallied an assist and likely brandished his unique skill set.

“It’s completely true that I asked Rijkaard if he would loan me Messi for Juventus,” stated during a radio interview.

“When the play had stopped for a minute I went over to Rijkaard and said, “You can’t play him because you’ve got three foreigners already. Why don’t you let me have him for a year?”

“Rijkaard replied: ‘We’re going to clear up the situation in three or four months and for that reason I can’t do it.’ That’s why Messi’s debut was last in coming. I knew the value of my full-backs and when I saw Messi play I knew he was special. I could see that he could do things that didn’t occur to other players.”

Present-day Messi is merely two goals short of breaking Telmo Zarra’s all-time La Liga goalscoring record, which sits at 251 tallies. It’s definitely interesting to ponder the varying paths Messi could have taken early in his career, but regardless of where he landed, one could assume that Barcelona would, at some juncture, jump into the mix to gain his signature. After all, the franchise can drop massive amounts of money to promote almost any acquisition.
