Last year’s down season at the Westfalenstadion made it easy to lose sight of the fact that Borussia Dortmund is one of the biggest clubs in the world.
Ilkay Gundogan clearly did not, and the in-demand 24-year-old has agreed to send more of his future BVB’s way, inking a one-year extension with the club despite perceived interest from around the globe.

With the fears of losing players like Gundogan, Mats Hummels and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this offseason, BVB has so far held firm. Their talent-laden roster’s struggles near the bottom of the table were mind-boggling.
From the Associated Press:Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc says, “I’m convinced that he will play a big role in BVB achieving its goals on the pitch.”
Gundogan scored nine goals and set up 10 more in 80 Bundesliga games since joining from Nuremberg in 2011. He missed much of the 2013/14 season with back problems.
He had been linked with Barcelona, Manchester United and Bayern Munich.
Big story for Dortmund, even if it’s a bit under-the-radar.
