As we continue our countdown to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil here at PST, each day from now until the tournament begins we will look back at a memorable moment from years gone by.
Here is number 20.
PST’s Top 20 World Cup moments - No. 20, Owen scores stunner vs. Argentina
“OWEEEEEN!”
The ecstasy felt in England as 18-year-old Michael Owen rounded one, two, then three Argentine defenders before smashing the ball into the top corner was instant. The Three Lions were on their way to knocking out bitter rivals Argentina in the second round of the 1998 World Cup in France.
Or so they thought...
Eventually England succumbed to Argentina on penalty kicks but Owen’s heroics was the lasting moment from England’s ’98 World Cup campaign. The pacey forward went on to score at both the 2002 and 2006 World Cups for England but a string of injuries curtailed his career as his pace evaporated and this goal against Argentina was to be Owen’s biggest moment on the world stage.

Owen’s international career petered out as the former European player of the year retired in his early 30’s and is now a TV commentator in the UK. The former Liverpool, Real Madrid, Newcastle, Man United and Stoke City forward scored 40 goals in 89 games for England which puts him fourth all-time on the list of top goalscorers for the Three Lions.
However none of his goals were more memorable than this stunning strike against Argentina.
