Trophée des Champions returning to North America to kick off 2015-16

Zlatan Ibrahimovic could be lifting meaningful silverware in Quebec next August.

The Trophée des Champions, France’s equivalent of England’s Community Shield, will be staged at Stade Saputo in Montreal next season.

The match pits the winner of Ligue 1 against the domestic cup winner, and was held at Red Bull Arena in 2012 and at Olympic Stadium in Montreal in 2009. That was the first year the match was contested away from France, but it has also been held in Tunisia, Morocco, Gabon and China.

Paris Saint-Germain has claimed the last two Trophées with wins over Bordeaux and Guingamp, but this year’s table is clustered to start the campaign. PSG hasn’t lost yet (7W-6D-0L) but is a point back of table-topping Marseille and just a point ahead of Lyon. USMNT star Alejandro Bedoya’s Nantes sits in fifth place.

It’ll be a long time until we know who will represent France in Montreal as Ligue 1 teams do not enter the Coupe de France until the Round of 64 in early 2015 and the final isn’t until May.
