Vaughn Dalzell breaks down how to bet Game 1 of the Oakland Athletics versus New York Mets series.
Mets (-180) at Athletics (+158): O/U 8.0
The Oakland Athletics played a day game in Baltimore yesterday and flew across the country to host a night game and new series with the Mets.
New York was off yesterday, so they had a little extra time to prepare for the West Coast trip, while Oakland lost on a walk-off home run at Baltimore. New York had one day off this season so far and won the following day 9-3 at home versus Miami.
Oakland used five pitchers and four of them went at least 1.0 inning. After a four-day and four-game series, I expect the Athletics’ bullpen to be a little shaky when the Mets visit.
New York is hitting RHP at the worse rate in the league (.190 BA) but James Kaprielian takes the mound for Oakland. Kaprielian’s allowed 12 earned runs and 14 hits over 9.2 innings and two starts this season. Kaprielian also has 11 strikeouts to five walks with four home runs permitted.
Oakland lost 11-0 and 12-11 in Kaprielian’s two starts compared to New York winning 5-1 and 5-2 in both of Kodai Senga‘s starts. Senga is 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA and 14 strikeouts to six walks and six hits over two starts against Miami.
I risked 1 unit and laid the hefty ML price with the Mets (-180) as this opened at -155 and quickly was bet up to -170/-180 range. I expect New York to find success at the plate and Senga to be a candidate to rack up six-plus strikeouts.
Pick: Mets ML (Risk 1u)
