Angels signed RHP Dillon Tate to a minor league contract.

The 32-year-old hurler hasn’t pitched since he was released by the Blue Jays at the end of the 2025 season. He’ll report to the team’s spring training complex in Arizona where he’ll build up before presumably heading out to Triple-A Salt Lake. It’s a nice low-risk signing for the Angels as they could wind up with a viable bullpen arm out of it.

The 31-year-old hurler just joined the Jays’ bullpen as a September call-up, but he’ll head back to Triple-A after working a scoreless inning in his lone appearance. Braydon Fisher was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo in a corresponding move and will take his place in the Jays’ bullpen.

The Jays are also adding waiver claim Isian Kiner-Falefa to the roster today, so Tate is their only official callup. Tate made five appearances for the Jays in April and May, allowing three runs in 5 1/3 innings. He had a 2.06 ERA and a 34/19 K/BB in 35 innings as a reliever for Buffalo.

Tate went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment last Friday and will remain with the organization as extra relief depth. The 31-year-old righty has made five relief appearances this season at the highest level.

The Blue Jays needed to free up a spot on their 40-man roster for Michael Stefanic on Friday and unfortunately Tate drew the short straw this time around. He has flashed serious potential in the past, so it’s possible that another bullpen-needy team is willing to take a chance on him on waivers.

Tate heads back to the minors after struggling in five relief appearances for the Blue Jays after being called up back on April 20. The 31-year-old righty figures to toggle between Triple-A Buffalo and Toronto’s bullpen for the rest of the season.

Tate was the fourth-overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft and eventually became a quality high-leverage reliever for the Orioles before injuries derailed him a couple seasons ago. The 30-year-old righty has looked outstanding this season at Triple-A Buffalo, posting a microscopic 1.50 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 7/1 K/BB ratio across six innings (five appearances).

Loperfido had a chance to compete for a spot on the Toronot’s Opening Day roster, but he struggled badly in Grapefruit League action, hitting just .207 (6-for-29) with zero homers and two RBI. He’ll continue to hone his craft at the Triple-A level until another opportunity arises.

It’s a split contract for Tate, who will get $1.4 million if he’s in the majors. The right-hander was non-tendered by the Jays in November after being picked up from the Orioles late last season. He’ll probably open the year in Triple-A, but there’s a good chance he’ll see significant time in the Toronto pen.

Tate was non-tendered by the Blue Jays in November after compiling a 4.66 ERA and 27/12 K/BB over 36 2/3 innings with Toronto and Baltimore. The 30-year-old will be a middle-innings option, and the signing likely has at least something to do with the potential loss of Erik Swanson (elbow) to begin the 2025 campaign.

The 30-year-old hurler compiled a 4.66 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and a 27/12 K/BB ratio over 36 2/3 innings between the Orioles and Blue Jays in 2024. The Blue Jays liked what they saw from Tate late in the season, but the $1.5 million - 1.8 million that he was expected to earn via arbitration was just too steep of a price tag for them to pay. He shouldn’t have any difficulty finding work on the open market.

Manny Machado hit a three-run homer and walked three times as the Padres beat the Dodgers 5-2 on Sunday Night Baseball.

Machado was intentionally walked with two on and two out in the fifth, after which Jack Dreyer got Gavin Sheets to ground out. He came up again with two on in the seventh, but this time there was a righty in the game, no base open and one out. He was pitched to, and he homered just over the wall in center on an 0-2 middle-middle fastball from Kyle Hurt. It was Machado’s fourth homer in eight games and sixth in 14 games.

JP Sears blanked the Dodgers five innings to earn a win on Sunday Night Baseball.

Sears gave up six hard-hit balls but just one hit, which was a single from Miguel Rojas in the fifth. He also threw first-pitch strikes to only eight of 17 batters. Still, he was very successful, obviously. The victory makes him 2-1 with a 4.70 ERA in his three starts for the Padres this year. He’ll probably stay in the rotation for now and face the Blue Jays next weekend.

Mason Miller was perfect in the ninth for his 22nd save Sunday against the Dodgers.

Miller got one strikeout tonight, which was actually his first in three appearances. He averaged 102.1 mph with his 10 fastballs. Miller has pitched on back-to-back days now, so he might be iffy for Monday. The Padres did use him three straight days once back in April.

Emmet Sheehan allowed one run in 4 1/3 innings Sunday against the Padres.

He struck out five and walked three. Back-to-back starts against San Diego have seen Sheehan allow two runs over 9 1/3 innings and lower his ERA from 5.32 to 4.91. More length would be nice, but since he’s been following Yoshinobu Yamamoto in the rotation for nearly two months now, he typically has a fairly rested bullpen behind him. He’ll likely start the final game of the first half next Sunday against the Diamondbacks, which could lead to an especially quick hook.

Tommy Edman struck out as a pinch-hitter against the Padres on Sunday.

Edman was scratched from the starting lineup as a precaution after being hit on the ankle by a Mason Miller pitch in Saturday’s game. He’ll probably be back in the lineup somewhere Monday against the Rockies.

Ranger Suarez left Sunday night’s game in the third inning with an apparent injury.

It seemed to be a leg issue sustained as he was going for a grounder to his left. He took one warmup throw afterwards and then decided to call it a night. Suarez allowed three runs and six hits in 2 2/3 innings before departing. Greg Weissert replaced him.

Emerson Hancock limited the Blue Jays to two hits over seven innings in the Mariners’ 4-0 shutout victory Sunday.

It’s the fourth straight Mariners game to end in a shutout, and they were on the right side of three of them (they beat the Angels 1-0 on Thursday, lost to the Jays 2-0 on Friday and won 11-0 on Saturday). Hancock was originally supposed to piggyback with Logan Gilbert on Saturday, but the Mariners scratched that the night before and Gilbert went out and pitched one-hit ball for seven innings. Now, Hancock has gone seven scoreless for the first time. He previously pitched six scoreless innings twice and seven innings of one-run ball once. He struck out five and generated 14 whiffs today, finishing with a 32 percent CSW. The Mariners probably won’t engage in any funny business in the rotation this week with six games in a row after the off day on Monday. Just like this weekend, they’ll likely go with Luis Castillo on Friday, Gilbert on Saturday and Hancock on Sunday against the Rays.

Trey Yesavage worked six innings and allowed three runs — two earned — in a loss to the Mariners on Sunday.

The unearned run was a product of Ernie Clement committing an error prior to Mitch Garver’s two-run homer in the third. Yesavage racked up seven strikeouts, his second highest total of the year. He allowed just three hits. He still hasn’t surrendered more than five hits in any outing this year, and he’s given up a total of eight in 18 1/3 innings over his last three outings. He’s 4-4 with a 3.31 ERA, and he’ll finish off the first half with a start in San Diego next weekend.

Mitch Garver hit a two-run homer off the Blue Jays’ Trey Yesavage in the Mariners’ win Sunday.

After doing a nice job while Cal Raleigh was on the injured list (.238/.304/.476 with three homers in 15 games), Garver, who was starting for the first time in seven days, is back to playing pretty seldomly since Raleigh returned. The homer today was his first this season with Raleigh on the active roster. He’s hitting just .194/.325/.330 overall.

Alejandro Kirk finished 0-for-4 against the Mariners in Sunday’s loss.

Kirk is batting .204 with one homer and five RBI in 16 games since returning from a fractured thumb. He did have four hard-hit balls in his previous start on Friday, but in addition to striking out once, his balls in play today were hit just 62, 48 and 80 mph.
