Braves recalled RHP JR Ritchie from Triple-A Gwinnett.

Ritchie provides Atlanta with some additional depth out of the bullpen with Bryce Elder not slated to take the ball until later next week against the Pirates. The 23-year-old top prospect has pitched to a respectable 4.87 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 37/25 K/BB ratio across 40 2/3 innings in the big leagues this season. He offers minimal fantasy appeal at the moment in what amounts to a low-leverage mop-up role.
How Padres can climb back into NL Wild Card race
Jason Benetti, Jake Peavy and Orel Hershiser examine what's next for the Padres after snapping their eight-game losing streak with a win over the Dodgers on Sunday Night Baseball.

The 23-year-old hurler was with the Braves for just one game this time around, picking up his first career save with three scoreless innings to finish out a lopsided victory over the Mets on Saturday. Carlos Carrasco was promoted from Triple-A Gwinnett to take his place in the Braves’ bullpen on Sunday.

Ritchie was scheduled to start for Triple-A Gwinnett on Saturday. He’s pitched to a respectable 4.87 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 37/25 K/BB ratio across 40 2/3 innings in the big leagues this season. The 23-year-old can function as either a traditional starter or bulk relief option, depending on Atlanta’s needs.

It just hasn’t come together for Ritchie, who has allowed 10 runs (nine earned) in 10 innings in his last two starts. The Braves could put Reynaldo Lopez back into the rotation, but Hurston Waldrep (elbow) could also be ready to make his season debut for Atlanta.

Ritchie tossed a scoreless first inning, then completely fell apart in the second. It started with two walks with one out, followed by four hits to bring five runs home for the Padres. The last run was scored on an error, making it an unearned run. Ritchie settled in to give the Braves three more scoreless innings while collecting seven strikeouts. He ends the day with a 4.87 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, and a 37/25 K/BB ratio across 40 2/3 innings. Ritchie is in line to take on the Cardinals in Atlanta next Tuesday.

Ritchie set a poor tone for his start by walking Luis Arraez to start the game. That was only the 16th walk Arraez has drawn all season and Rafael Devers doubled him home a few batters later. Then, the floodgates opened in the second when Ritchie gave up home runs to Willy Adames, Arraez, and Bryce Eldridge. He did wind up retiring the final nine batters he faced, but the damage was already done. Without wipeout stuff, fastball command is very important for Ritchie. He struggled with such early on before finding it after settling in.He’s for a two-start week coming up against the Padres and Giants, again, with both games coming on the road.

Braves manager Walt Weiss told reporters late Friday that Strider will undergo an MRI to determine the severity of the injury and whether he’s dealing with any structural issues. It’s an extremely concerning development given his injury history, which already includes two elbow surgeries. The 27-year-old former fantasy ace experienced a noticeable velocity dip, which lead to his removal from Friday’s start against the Mets in the fourth inning after just 68 pitches. There should be a definitive update on his status later this weekend. Top prospect JR Ritchie, who fired five shutout innings in relief following Strider’s departure, appears to be the most logical candidate to fill his rotation spot.

“It doesn’t look great as we stand here, right now,” said Weiss after Strider experienced shoulder and elbow soreness, which led to his early exit from the fourth inning of Friday’s start against the Mets after just 68 pitches. He also experienced a significant velocity drop prior to exiting, which is never a good sign, especially for a pitcher with two elbow surgeries already on his resume. He was charged with seven runs on six hits, including three home runs, in the abbreviated outing. He struck out three and issued one walk. He’ll undergo imaging to determine the exact nature of the injury. There should be a definitive update on his status at some point this weekend. It seems highly unlikely that he’ll make his next start against the Giants on Thursday. The logical choice to fill his rotation spot would be top prospect JR Ritchie, who threw five scoreless innings following Strider’s departure.

Ritchie was called up from Triple-A Gwinnett prior to Wednesday’s contest and will operate in a long relief capacity out of Atlanta’s bullpen. The 22-year-old top prospect had some early success with the Braves before being sent back to the minors last month. His stuff should play up in shorter bursts out of the bullpen, but the lack of volume certainly diminishes his immediate fantasy appeal.

Ritchie was sent back down to the minors on May 19th after pitching to a 4.91 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, and 21/16 K/BB ratio in 25 2/3 innings with the Braves. There doesn’t seem to be an open spot for him in the rotation, but Braves beat writer Grant McAuley suggested the move could signal “the possibility of shifting Grant Holmes to the bullpen.” We’ll have to wait and see if that’s what the Braves are planning to do, but Ritchie does not need to be added in fantasy leagues right now.

After a solid MLB debut, it’s been downhill for Ritchie, who now has a 4.91 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, and 21/16 K/BB ratio in 25 2/3 MLB innings. Many people had added him in hopes of a solid two-start week this week, but he will only get one start. It seems that it will be Martín Pérez, who will start on Sunday and get a sneaky good two-start week.

Jarren Duran went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and a walk as the Red Sox topped the Angels 7-5 on Sunday night.

The homer was his 13th, so power production hasn’t really been his issue. However, Duran came into this one hitless in his previous four games. It was his first multihit game since June 16 and his first time reaching base safely three times in a game since May 30. His OBP is sitting at .259, compared to .346, .342 and .332 the previous three years.

Aroldis Chapman surrendered his first homer of the year but still picked up his 18th save Sunday against the Angels.

Chapman gave up a solo shot to Zach Neto while pitching with a three-run lead. He struck out two of the other three batters he faced. Chapman, who was picked for his ninth All-Star team on Saturday, has a 2.36 ERA and a 35/12 K/BB through 26 2/3 innings.

Ryan Johnson surrendered five runs — two earned — in four innings Sunday in a loss to the Red Sox.

Johnson gave up a two-run homer in the second and a three-run blast in the third, but the runs from the latter were all unearned after a Zach Neto error extended the inning. It brings Johnson’s total of homers allowed to eight in 28 1/3 innings this season and 12 in 43 innings total as a major leaguer. He’s definitely throwing better now than he has at any other point since debuting with the Angels, but he remains far away from contributing in fantasy leagues. He’ll likely face the Twins on Saturday.

Willson Contreras hit a three-run homer and walked against the Angels in Sunday’s victory.

Contreras’s 20th homer came in his 86th game of the season. Last year, he hit 20 in 135 games for the Cardinals. He’s now just four shy of his career high from 2019, when he hit 24 in 105 games for the Cubs. Unfortunately, this might be Contreras’s last action for a bit. MLB is expected to hand down a decision on his appeal of a seven-game suspension on Monday. Even if it’s dropped to six games, that’d still put him out until after the break.

Zach Neto finished 3-for-5 with a homer and a double against the Red Sox on Sunday night.

Neto hit the first homer allowed by Aroldis Chapman this season, sending a 96.5-mph fastball 396 feet to left. It was his 19th homer, which is second behind Colson Montgomery at 23 among those who primarily play shortstop. He’s hit nine in his last 27 games.

After four straight hitless games, Jo Adell went 3-for-4 with two RBI against the Red Sox on Sunday.

None of Adell’s hits left the bat at over 84 mph, but he managed a couple of liners that dropped in front of infielders and a groundball single. Adell had been in a 1-for-21 slump that dropped his average to .239.

Ranger Suarez left his start Sunday with left adductor tightness, according to the Red Sox.

One imagines Suarez will be placed on the IL prior to Tuesday’s game. Even if this is minor, a 15-day IL stint would cost him just one start next weekend and allow him to return the fifth day after the All-Star break.

Manny Machado hit a three-run homer and walked three times as the Padres beat the Dodgers 5-2 on Sunday Night Baseball.

Machado was intentionally walked with two on and two out in the fifth, after which Jack Dreyer got Gavin Sheets to ground out. He came up again with two on in the seventh, but this time there was a righty in the game, no base open and one out. He was pitched to, and he homered just over the wall in center on an 0-2 middle-middle fastball from Kyle Hurt. It was Machado’s fourth homer in eight games and sixth in 14 games.

JP Sears blanked the Dodgers five innings to earn a win on Sunday Night Baseball.

Sears gave up six hard-hit balls but just one hit, which was a single from Miguel Rojas in the fifth. He also threw first-pitch strikes to only eight of 17 batters. Still, he was very successful, obviously. The victory makes him 2-1 with a 4.70 ERA in his three starts for the Padres this year. He’ll probably stay in the rotation for now and face the Blue Jays next weekend.

Mason Miller was perfect in the ninth for his 22nd save Sunday against the Dodgers.

Miller got one strikeout tonight, which was actually his first in three appearances. He averaged 102.1 mph with his 10 fastballs. Miller has pitched on back-to-back days now, so he might be iffy for Monday. The Padres did use him three straight days once back in April.
