Webb will start on Saturday out of the break

Webb walked one batter and struck out two in this one while throwing 66 percent of his pitches for strikes. Shockingly, he had just three total whiffs and a three percent swinging strike rate. Yes, three percent. Webb has just a 10 percent swinging strike rate on the season and has notched more than five strikeouts in a game once since June 14. You’re getting plenty of ratio help with Webb, but the lack of strikeouts dampens some of his fantasy value.

Roupp gave up two hits, walked five and struck out three. He fell to 7-11 with the loss. With the game scoreless after five innings, the drama started in the sixth inning. Roupp’s control abandoned him as he walked three of the first four hitters to start the inning. He was removed, but was clearly unhappy about it as he unleashed some words at manager Tony Vitello on the mound. The camera found Roupp tilting in the dugout as reliever Keaton Winn walked in a run with the bases-loaded. Winn was able to get out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts, though. Roupp has a 4.22 ERA. He’s lined up to face the Rockies at home next weekend.

Ray allowed seven hits and walked five with just a 16 percent CSW, so this really could have been worse. And it was still better than Casey Mize’s debut, so he has that going for him. Ray will face the Brewers next on Wednesday.

San Diego manager Craig Stammen added that Robbie Ray will make his debut against the Astros on Friday. Mize was a last-minute addition at the trade deadline after posting a strong 2.70 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 85/19 K/BB ratio across 86 2/3 innings for the Tigers. He’s been battling some lingering groin issues throughout the year, but he’s ready to roll this week after heading out west.

Webb evened his record at 7-7 with his third scoreless start and 12th quality start in 19 tries. The Giants figure to be pretty bad the rest of the way, so wins could be hard to come by for Webb. His teammates got the job done tonight, though. Webb will next face the Tigers on Sunday.

According to The Athletic’s Dennis Lin, the Giants are paying about half of the $9 milllion or so Ray is owed, including a portion of his $1 million trade bonus. Ray will join Michael King and Walker Buehler in a Padres rotation that could get Nick Pivetta and/or Joe Musgrove back at the end of the month. Another bat would be nice, but the chances of a late run are looking up. Ray, 34, had a 3.08 ERA in 122 2/3 innings for the Giants. He’s at 1.09 while focusing on his sinker in his last seven starts.

RHP Miguel Mendez and shortstop Joniel Hernandez make up the return for the Giants. Ray will join a Padres rotation that’s pretty much just Michael King and some swingmen at the moment. He has a 3.08 ERA this season as he closes out a five-year, $115 million deal he originally signed with the Mariners.

Ray’s likely final start for the Giants was a very good one, as he struck out six and walked one while allowing only three singles and a double. He’s now 6-0 with a 1.09 ERA in his last eight starts. His 41/21 K/BB in 49 1/3 innings during the stretch isn’t nearly as impressive, but with the way his groundball rate has ticked up, he should be pretty attractive to contenders.

Webb was probably done at 96 pitches anyway, but any chance of him coming back out disappeared when the Giants scored seven runs off three pitchers in a lengthy bottom of the sixth. The big inning ensured that Webb would get his first win after two losses and two no-decisions this month. He’s now 6-7 with a 3.93 ERA overall. He’ll make his next start Monday against the Rangers. That’s trade deadline day, but the Giants have been very clear that he’s not one of the players they’re willing to move.

Roupp stranded two runners in the first, tossed a clean second, then gave up one run on a walk and a hit in the third inning. Things got away from him with two outs in the fourth as he walked a batter, hit another, then gave up a run on a base hit. He’d walk one more before he was relieved on the mound, failing to get out of the fourth inning. The 27-year-old right-hander ends the day with a 4.12 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and a 114/48 K/BB ratio across 113 2/3 innings. He’ll take on the Padres in San Diego on Sunday.
