Castillo: Yankees have called on Hunter Goodman

Goodman missed each of the team’s previous two games after jamming his hand on a play at the plate on Monday against the Dodgers. He’ll function as the Rockies’ designated hitter and bat cleanup against Carson Whisenhunt on Thursday night in San Francisco.

Goodman sits out his second straight contest after jamming his hand on a play at home plate during Monday’s series opener in Los Angeles. The 26-year-old slugging backstop underwent precautionary X-rays that came back negative for any fractures, which is an extremely encouraging development. He’s officially day-to-day with a left hand contusion.

Goodman said he jammed his wrist during Monday’s game on a play at the plate. He’ll undergo further evaluation and possibly imaging to determine the severity of the issue. The 26-year-old All-Star backstop was in Colorado’s initial lineup at DH but has since been replaced by Mickey Moniak. He’s had a phenomenal first half, launching 27 home runs in 85 games. There should be some additional clarity on his status at some point this week.

After three straight days catching, Goodman will take his first breather since June 21. Brett Sullivan is getting a start for the Rockies while Willi Castro bats cleanup. Goodman is hitting .243/.306/.547 with 27 homers in just 340 plate appearances so far this year — the double/homer distribution has been skewed in favor of homers so far this year, much to the delight of fantasy managers.

Goodman now has 25 home runs on the season. He hit solo shots off Mike Paredes in the first and third innings before a three-run shot off Cody Funderburk in the seventh inning. After hitting 31 home runs in 144 games in his first full MLB season last year, Goodman is on pace to threaten 40 home runs this year.

The Rockies were held scoreless through the first seven innings on Friday and faced a 7-0 deficit heading to the eighth. They scored three runs in the eighth to pull a bit closer, then Goodman’s two-run shot capped off a five-run ninth that gave the Rockies an 8-7 advantage. Unfortunately, it would be short lived, and they would fall in 10. Goodman finished the night 1-for-4 and is now hitting .240/.307/.510 with 22 homers and 42 RBI on the season.

It’s presumably a routine day off for Goodman after starting 23 consecutive games between catcher and DH since May 25. The 26-year-old slugging backstop has homered a whopping 10 times during that span. It’ll be Brett Sullivan behind the dish with rookie Sterlin Thompson at DH on Sunday afternoon.

Taking advantage of the conditions in Las Vegas, the teams combined for eight homers today, with the Rockies responsible for six of them. Goodman is now up to 20 homers on the season, and he took Jeffrey Springs deep in the first inning to give Colorado a 2-0 lead. That was one of six homers on the day for Colorado, and the slugger added a second while also singling thrice for a five-hit night. Goodman has looked the part again in 2026, and there’s not much reason to think he won’t be among the best fantasy catchers in baseball for the foreseeable future.

Goodman gave the Rockies a 2-0 lead with a shot to right-center off Colin Rea in the first inning. The 26-year-old also drew a pair of walks, and the three-reach game gives him a slash of .243/.319/.526 with 18 homers and 33 runs driven in. The lack of RBI is a smidgen frustrating, but not really in his control. Goodman has established himself as one of the best fantasy catchers in the sport.

Goodman’s home run was his 17th. The 26-year-old catcher hit a solo shot off Craig Yoho in the ninth inning. Goodman is hitting .242 with an .828 OPS, 39 runs, 31 RBI and five stolen bases. So far it’s been a solid follow-up to his 2025 season, when he hit 31 home runs and knocked in 91 runs.
