Red Sox selected Florida first baseman Matt LaPorta in the 14th round of Tuesday’s draft.
LaPorta was projected as a sure first-round pick entering the year, but he suffered a strained oblique and he lost command of the strike zone when he was healthy. Since he fell as far as he did, there’s a good chance he’ll return to Florida for his senior season. However, he has the potential to be a steal if the Red Sox can sign him. A first baseman with middle-of-the-order potential is a definite need within the organization.

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol told reporters Hunter Dobbins is being moved into the rotation.
Dobbins figures to jump into St. Louis’ rotation at some point during next week’s three-game series against the Mets as they move to a six-man mix moving forward. The 26-year-old has posted a 2.77 ERA and 14/7 K/BB ratio across 13 innings over three appearances since coming off the injured list last month. He struck out six over five shutout frames in relief against the Reds on Friday night.

James Schiano discusses the improvement that Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong has made on offense in recent weeks, including the .455 batting average and 1.409 OPS he has posted in his last five games.
  • STL 3rd Baseman #29
Ramón Urías (elbow) has been pulled off a minor league rehab assignment.
Urías will undergo further evaluation after experiencing left elbow pain while swinging during his rehab assignment. The 32-year-old was on the injured list with a different right elbow issue since May 5. There should be some clarity on his status at some point in the coming days.
  • BAL Catcher #29
Samuel Basallo (abdomen) is out of the lineup for Saturday’s showdown against the Blue Jays.
Basallo will undergo further evaluation this weekend to determine whether he’ll require a trip to the injured list. In the meantime, the Orioles brought up Sam Huff as emergency catching depth behind Adley Rutschman. The 21-year-old prodigy made a precautionary exit from Friday’s series opener at the Rogers Centre with right abdominal discomfort. There should be a clearer idea of his status before the weekend concludes. We’ll have updates on the developing situation as it unfolds.
  • BAL Catcher #23
Orioles selected the contract of C Sam Huff from Triple-A Norfolk.
Huff receives the call to join Baltimore’s catching mix as emergency depth behind starter Adley Rutschman while Samuel Basallo deals with an abdominal issue. The 28-year-old offers some over-the-fence pop but little else at this stage of his career. He got into three games for the Orioles earlier this month.
  • BAL 3rd Baseman #32
Orioles designated INF/OF Weston Wilson for assignment.
Wilson loses his spot on Baltimore’s 40-man roster with the club bringing up Sam Huff as emergency catching depth prior to Saturday’s contest against Toronto. The 31-year-old is capable of handling multiple defensive spots and still has some appeal as a lefty-mashing bench bat.
  • FA Relief Pitcher #62
    Mets released LHP Anderson Severino.
Severino has been cut loose to pursue a more lucrative opportunity overseas in Japan, according to The Athletic’s Will Sammon. The 31-year-old passed through waivers unclaimed after being removed from New York’s 40-man roster last week. He didn’t end up making an appearance for the Mets after signing a minor league contract last offseason.
  • CIN Shortstop #44
Elly De La Cruz (hamstring) will undergo a followup MRI next week.
De La Cruz has resumed baseball activities and appears ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation process from a hamstring strain that put him on the shelf earlier this week. The 24-year-old was originally expected to miss 2-4 weeks, but it’s starting to look like he’ll be on the shorter end of that spectrum. There should be a definitive return timeline once he undergoes additional imaging on Friday.
  • CIN Starting Pitcher #21
Reds manager Terry Francona told reporters Hunter Greene (elbow) could return before next month’s All-Star break.
Greene remains without a definitive return timetable at this juncture in his rehabilitation from arthroscopic surgery to remove bone chips and loose bodies from his pitching elbow back in early March. However, he’s progressed to throwing bullpen sessions and could potentially make it back to Cincinnati’s rotation sometime around late June or early July. He’ll need a handful of rehab starts before he’s ready to make his season debut. There should be a clearer timeline once he’s cleared to make his first rehab start.
  • MIN Center Fielder #25
Byron Buxton (shoulder) is out of the lineup for Saturday’s contest against the Royals.
Twins manager Derek Shelton said there are no plans for Buxton to undergo imaging after he suffered a right shoulder contusion while making a phenomenal leaping catch at the center-field wall during the third inning of Friday’s series opener against the Royals. It’s the same shoulder that he injured while sliding into second base back on May 23. The 32-year-old fantasy stalwart will get some extra time off to rest and recover this weekend, but he appears to have avoided serious injury. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day heading into Sunday’s series finale. It’ll be Ryan Kreidler taking over in center field on Saturday afternoon.
  • KC 3rd Baseman #11
Maikel Garcia (hamstring) is in the lineup at DH for Saturday’s showdown against the Twins.
Garcia, who came off the bench to pinch-hit during Friday’s series opener, returns to Kansas City’s lineup in the cleanup spot following a six-game absence due to a right hamstring strain that he suffered last weekend. The 26-year-old infielder somehow managed to a trip to the injured list, but he’ll likely be limited to DH for a couple days, if not longer. It’s fair to question how the Royals handled the situation, but Garcia appears unlikely to miss any additional time.
