Phillies RHP Zach Pop elected free agency.

Pop was jettisoned from Philadelphia’s relief mix last weekend after just seven appearances earlier this season. The 29-year-old was hit hard during a minor league rehab assignment at Triple-A Lehigh Valley while working his way back from a calf strain that put him on the injured list back in mid-April. He should be able to latch on somewhere else as organizational depth.

ATL Starting Pitcher #30

Hurston Waldrep (elbow) allowed one run over two innings on Saturday in a minor league rehab start in the Rookie-level Florida Complex League.

Waldrep struck out four, issued three walks and also uncorked a wild pitch in his second rehab outing in the lower minors. The 24-year-old former top prospect will need a couple additional outings, especially some against higher-level competition, before he’s ready to rejoin Atlanta’s rotation sometime around late June or early July.

Steven Matz

TB Starting Pitcher #32

Steven Matz is being moved to the bullpen, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.

Matz has been removed from Tampa Bay’s rotation after allowing 11 runs combined over 4 2/3 innings during his previous two starts. The 35-year-old got an opportunity to start with the Rays and delivered a bloated 5.48 ERA and 37/17 K/BB ratio across 46 innings over 10 starts. He was scheduled to take the ball for Monday’s series opener against the Red Sox. No word yet how the Rays will fill his rotation spot.

Ryan Borucki

FA Relief Pitcher #47
Giants released LHP Ryan Borucki.

Borucki has been cut loose after going unclaimed on waivers following his removal from San Francisco’s bullpen mix earlier this week. The well-traveled 32-year-old southpaw posted an underwhelming 4.94 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 15/9 K/BB ratio across 23 2/3 innings for the Giants this season.

Chris Bassitt

BAL Starting Pitcher #40

Chris Bassitt (back) threw a bullpen session on Saturday.

Bassitt underwent imaging on his ailing back and it sounds like there’s a chance he doesn’t make his next start against the Mariners on Monday. He made an early exit from his previous start against the Red Sox with lower back tightness. There should be a final decision on his status at some point later this weekend.

Garrett Whitlock

BOS Relief Pitcher #22

Garrett Whitlock (knee) will make a minor league rehab appearance on Saturday for Triple-A Worcester.

Whitlock has made a rapid recovery after hitting the injured list with knee inflammation back in late May. The 29-year-old high-leverage specialist figures to make it back to Boston’s bullpen at some point next week, possibly as early as Monday’s series opener against the Rays.

Chandler Simpson

Chandler Simpson (thumb) is out of the lineup for Saturday’s game against the Marlins.

Rays manager Kevin Cash divulged Friday that Simpson has been playing through a thumb contusion that he suffered earlier this week. The 25-year-old speedster figures to avoid a trip to the injured list, but that’s hardly a lock. He’ll get some extra time off to rest and hopefully put the issue to bed. Richie Palacios is in left field with Victor Mesa Jr. in the opposite corner on Saturday afternoon. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day heading into Sunday’s series finale in Miami.

Hunter Brown

HOU Starting Pitcher #58

Hunter Brown (elbow) will make another minor league rehab start on Wednesday for Triple-A Sugar Land.

Astros manager Joe Espada told reporters Brown will need at least one additional tune-up before returning to the club’s rotation in mid-June. The 27-year-old fantasy ace threw just 57 pitches over 4 1/3 innings during his latest rehab outing earlier this week, so it makes sense for him to continue building up his pitch count before returning to Houston’s rotation.

Curtis Mead

WSH 1st Baseman #45

Curtis Mead is back in the lineup for Saturday’s showdown against the Diamondbacks.

Mead returns to the second spot in Washington’s lineup to face Arizona lefty Eduardo Rodriguez after spending Friday’s contest on the bench. The 25-year-old has taken over as the club’s starting third baseman back in mid-May and hasn’t looked back, hitting .278 (15-for-54) with four homers and 11 RBI over 15 games during that span. He’s worthy of a speculative roster spot in leagues where he’s still on the waiver wire given his recent production, everyday role and former prospect status.

Ildemaro Vargas

AZ 1st Baseman #6
Ildemaro Vargas (general soreness) remains out of the lineup for Saturday’s game against the Nationals.

Vargas came off the bench as a defensive replacement during Friday’s series opener, which is an encouraging sign. The 34-year-old will get some extra time off to recover after a serious collision with Dodgers slugger Max Muncy earlier this week. He suffered multiple bruises, but X-rays came back negative. It’ll be rookie LuJames Groover drawing another start at first base in his absence.
