Rule 5 Draft pick Jose Mesa will compete for a spot in the Orioles’ starting rotation this spring.
Orioles manager Buck Showalter had some nice things to say about the 24-year-old right-hander on the first day of camp Wednesday in Florida. Mesa put up a promising 1.93 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, and 101/32 K/BB ratio in 84 innings (eight starts, 21 relief appearances) last season between High-A Tampa and Double-A Trenton, affiliates of the Yankees. He is the son of former 19-year major league veteran Jose Mesa, who pitched for the Orioles from 1987-1992.

Gerrit Cole threw a 35-pitch live bullpen session and told reporters he and the Yankees “will likely” discuss him pitching in a Spring Training game.
This is a great sign for Cole’s chances of coming back sooner rather than later, but the Yankees will likely be cautious with him and he will need to build up to be ready to pitch in the majors. Still, a late April or early May return sounds like what this is trending towards barring a setback.
Ohtani, Judge shining in WBC amid peak of careers
Dan Le Batard reflects on the days of United States-Japan exhibition games before debating Shohei Ohtani vs. Aaron Judge and the World Baseball Classic's place among international competitions.
  • PIT 2nd Baseman #81
Pirates reassigned IF Termarr Johnson, C Derek Berg, IF Nick Cimillio, LHP Nick Dombkowski, IF Duce Gourson, LHP Oddanier Mosqueda, OF Ronny Simon and IF Davis Wendzel to minor league camp.
Johnson was 7-for-19 in Spring Training with no homers or stolen bases, leaving him as a career .327/.411/.531 hitter in three years in big league camp. After hitting .272/.363/.382 for Double A Altoona last year as a 21-year-old, he’ll likely head to Triple-A Indianapolis in 2026.
  • CHC Center Fielder #1
Cubs optioned OF Justin Dean, LHP Luke Little and LHP Ryan Rolison to Triple-A Iowa; reassigned RHP Vince Velasquez, C Ariel Armas, C Casey Opitz, and OF Brett Bateman to minor league camp.
Dean was claimed off waivers twice this offseason after playing a bench role for the Dodgers in the World Series. He’ll provide bench help if called upon.
  • HOU Relief Pitcher #56
Astros reassigned RHP Anthony Maldonado and RHP Michael Knorr to minor league camp.
Maldonado had a 2.84 ERA in 6.1 spring innings, but struck out just two batters. He’ll be an interesting depth piece for the Astros this year assuming he sticks around.
  • ATH Starting Pitcher #53
Gunnar Hoglund is dealing with a back issue that will delay the start to his season.
The 26-year-old hasn’t pitched at all in Spring Training. It’s likely he’ll need to get ramped up before he’s ready to pitch in any role in the bigs, and he finished the 2025 season on IL with a hip impingement that required surgery. Hoglund stocks are cheap in 16-team AL dynasty leagues.
  • CHC Starting Pitcher #16
USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports Matthew Boyd has left Team USA and will return to Cubs camp.
Per Jesse Rogers, Boyd will start Chicago’s opener against the Nationals. The Cubs clearly want him to stay ramped up for that game. Boyd profiles as a top-50 starter this year and should be started with aplomb against what looks to be a dismantled Nationals offense.
  • MIN Starting Pitcher #41
USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports Joe Ryan will join the American WBC roster after the quarterfinals, replacing Clayton Kershaw.
That is, of course, assuming the American squad advances against Canada, perhaps something we shouldn’t take for granted. Kershaw hasn’t officially logged an inning on the squad in the tournament. Ryan could start either of the presumptive final two games for Team USA.
  • AZ Relief Pitcher #40
Diamondbacks reassigned RHP Bryce Jarvis, RHP Isaiah Campbell, RHP Shawn Dubin, RHP Thomas Hatch, C Matt O’Neill, OF Oscar Mercado and OF Kristian Robinson to minor league camp.
None of these players were expected to make a big impact in the majors this year, and most of them were brought on for minor-league contracts. Jarvis was DFA’ed after the season and sent outright to Triple-A Reno. He carried a 5.73 ERA in 22 innings with the Snakes last year, but has a 3.69 career major league ERA and is probably the most likely of the crew to make MLB appearances this year.
  • CWS 2nd Baseman #0
MLB.com’s Scott Merkin believes Luisangel Acuña could become the White Sox’s regular center fielder.
Brooks Baldwin is dealing with right elbow soreness and the White Sox seem committed to giving Acuña a trial of sorts out there while letting Chase Meidroth handle second base. While Acuña is hardly a must-roster in AL-only leagues, his speed could be compelling in 5x5 formats. He stole 16 bases in just 193 plate appearances for the Mets last year.
  • NYY Starting Pitcher
Yankees reassigned RHP Ben Hess and RHP Brendan Beck to minor league camp.
Hess carried a 1.80 ERA in five innings of Spring Training ball, striking out six. He’ll likely return to Double-A, where he posted a 0.95 WHIP and 2.70 ERA in seven starts in 2025, to start the 2026 campaign.
