Astros RHP prospect Misael Tamarez allowed just three hits in five scoreless innings for Double-A Corpus Christi on Sunday.
Tamarez, 22, walked three and fanned three over the shutout frames. The right-hander has had a solid first three appearances in Double-A, as he owns a 1.59 ERA and 13 strikeouts against six walks in 11 1/3 innings of work. The best pitch in his arsenal is a fastball that can get into the upper 90s, but Tamarez also has an above-average slider and two more usable offerings in his change and a softer curve. The issue for the 6-foot-1, 206-pound hurler is throwing consistent strikes, and it’s enough of an issue right now that many tab him for the bullpen. If the command can reach average, he has a chance to be a strong starting option. If not, his arsenal could do wonders in the bullpen.
