Adalberto Mondesi (knee) has been ramping up baseball activities as he’s finally making progress in his recovery from left knee surgery.

The 28-year-old has been taking ground balls, hitting and running on the field. It’s an intriguing development for sure, but at this point it’s hard to count on Mondesi for anything this season. He’ll require a lengthy minor league rehab assignment — and will need to make it through that fully healthy — before being an option for the Red Sox.

Red Sox optioned LHP Alec Gamboa to Triple-A Worcester.

Gamboa retreats to the minors with Patrick Sandoval coming off the injured list. The 29-year-old lefty has allowed two runs over five innings across four relief appearances for the Red Sox this season.

Red Sox designated Jack Anderson for assignment.

Anderson winds up losing his spot on Boston’s 40-man roster with southpaw Patrick Sandoval coming off the 60-day injured list. The unheralded 26-year-old allowed three runs over eight innings of work during a three-appearance span for the Red Sox earlier this year.

Diamondbacks activated C James McCann from the 10-day injured list.

McCann returns to Arizona’s catching mix as starter Gabriel Moreno’s backup following a nearly seven-week absence recovering from a quad strain that put him on the injured list back in late May. He showed some signs of life in his Diamondbacks debut last year and should be able to stick around in a reserve role for now.

Diamondbacks optioned C Adrian Del Castillo to Triple-A Reno.

Del Castillo returns to the minors with veteran James McCann back from the injured list to serve as starter Gabriel Moreno’s primary caddy. The 26-year-old offers an intriguing offensive ceiling, but he’s hit just .185 (28-for-151) with five homers and 23 RBI across 51 games in the majors this season.

Cubs signed LHP Josh Fleming to a minor league contract.

Fleming finds a new opportunity with the injury-depleted Cubs after being released by the Blue Jays over the weekend. The soft-tossing 30-year-old southpaw allowed four runs over three innings during his lone appearance for Toronto earlier this year. He’s made 81 appearances, including 25 starts, in the big leagues since 2020.

Steven Matz (ankle) will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Thursday with Triple-A Durham.

Matz landed on the injured list with a sprained ankle back on June 25. The 35-year-old southpaw lost his spot in Tampa Bay’s rotation back in early June and will continue operating out of the bullpen once he’s back. He doesn’t offer any fantasy appeal in his current role.

ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel reports Bishop Feehan H.S. (MA) LHP Brody Bumila shared an MRI with teams that revealed a UCL injury.

It’s a massive injury bombshell with less than one week remaining until the MLB Draft. The 6-foot-9 Massachusetts prep lefty was hitting triple-digits routinely this spring following last year’s internal brace procedure on his elbow. The 18-year-old is committed to Texas and could ultimately wind up heading to college if he slips far enough in the draft due to injury concerns. He was universally-regarded as a top-25 range selection prior to this latest development.

Giancarlo Stanton (calf) remains shut down from running.

Stanton remains in a bit of a holding pattern following a mid-June setback in his recovery from a calf strain that put him on the shelf back in late April. The 36-year-old veteran slugger will need to ramp up his running progression before there’s a clearer timetable for his potential return to New York’s lineup. It’s worth noting that Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters he believes Stanton will return this season. It feels safe to assume he’ll be out until sometime in August.

Jeremy Peña (calf) will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Tuesday with Triple-A Sugar Land.

Lance McCullers Jr. (shoulder) and Ronel Blanco (elbow) are scheduled to pitch in the same rehab contest. The 28-year-old shortstop hit the injured list with a mild calf strain last week and figures to return to Houston before next week’s All-Star break. He was just starting to really find his stride at the dish prior to the injury, hitting .319 (29-for-91) with three homers, 13 RBI and five steals in the month of June.

Hurston Waldrep will start Tuesday’s series opener against the Pirates.

That means Bryce Elder will get the ball for one of the final two games of the series with Grant Holmes likely to draw the starting assignment in the other. Elder had his previous start skipped for some extra rest. Waldrep authored a strong performance against the Cardinals last week, allowing three runs over 5 1/3 innings, during his first start of the season. He offers enough strikeout upside to be interesting in deeper fantasy leagues.
