Nick Allen went 4-for-5 with a homer and five RBI as the A’s topped the White Sox 12-4 on Friday.

Allen had as many hits tonight a in his previous nine games combined and as many RBI as in his previous 30 games. Of course, the 24-year-old is better known for his glove than for his bat. If he had showed up 20 years ago, there’s little doubt that he’d have a solid career as a regular. These days, though, teams want a little more offensive from their No. 9 hitters. It’s still possible Allen will prove adequate, but his .209/.257/.284 line this year isn’t very encouraging.

Brandon Nimmo (hamstring) returned to the Rangers’ starting lineup for Friday night’s contest against the Angels.

Nimmo was pulled from Wednesday’s series finale against the Rockies due to tightness in his right hamstring. He had said all along that it was a precautionary measure and that he planned to play on Friday and that appears to be the case. He’s batting third against Angels’ right-hander Grayson Rodriguez on Friday evening in Los Angeles.

SF Left Fielder #17

Heliot Ramos (quad) received a platelet-rich plasma injection on Friday and will be shut down from baseball activity for the next week.

The Giants are hopeful that the injection will take care of the quad strain that Ramos had been battling and that he’ll be able to start building back up after resting for a week. As of now there’s no clear timeline for a potential return to the Giants’ lineup.

Ty Blach

CHC Relief Pitcher #50

Cubs sent LHP Ty Blach outright to Triple-A Iowa.

Blach, 35, had been designated for assignment earlier in the week. He made just one appearance during his brief stay with the Cubs, hurling three scoreless innings of relief. He’ll bide his time at Triple-A Iowa until another opportunity arises at the big league level.

Austin Slater

NYM Right Fielder #40

Mets sent OF Austin Slater outright to Triple-A Syracuse.

The 33-year-old outfielder was designated for assignment on Tuesday but passed through waivers unclaimed and will continue to serve as extra outfield depth for the Mets. He’s slashing a ghastly .209/.286/.233 with a 31 percent strikeout rate over 49 plate appearances between the Mets and Marlins this season.

Brenan Hanifee

DET Relief Pitcher #75

Tigers recalled RHP Brenan Hanifee from Triple-A Toledo.

With Burch Smith (shoulder) the latest Tigers’ hurler to hit the injured list, Hanifee will get another shot to work out of the club’s bullpen. The 27-year-old righty sports a terrific 1.93 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and a 5/1 K/BB ratio over 9 1/3 innings in seven appearances with the big league club this season.

Burch Smith

DET Relief Pitcher #54

Tigers placed RHP Burch Smith on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation.

As anticipated, the 36-year-old hurler winds up on the injured list due to inflammation in his pitching shoulder. No word yet on the results of his MRI or how long he may be sidelined for. Brenan Hanifee was recalled from Triple-A Toledo to take his place in the Tigers’ bullpen.

Logan Webb

SF Starting Pitcher #62

Logan Webb (knee) will make a minor league rehab start at Triple-A Sacramento on Friday.

The expectation is that if all goes well with that tune-up, then Webb will be cleared to rejoin the Giants’ rotation next week. The 29-year-old hurler has been sidelined since early May due to bursitis in his right knee.

Yusei Kikuchi

LAA Starting Pitcher #16

Angels transferred LHP Yusei Kikuchi to the 60-day injured list.

Nothing has changed in the prognosis for the 34-year-old hurler, this was done as a procedural move on Friday to free up a spot on the team’s 40-man roster for the promotion of Wade Meckler and Donovan Walton. Kikuchi is dealing with inflammation in his pitching shoulder and has been shut down through the end of May before he starts to build back up again.

Josh Lowe

LAA Left Fielder #3

Angels optioned OF Josh Lowe to Triple-A Salt Lake.

While surprising, Lowe has badly struggled at the plate throughout the season — slashing a woeful .184/.226/.320 — so having time to retool his swing and find himself again isn’t the worst idea. Wade Meckler was promoted from Triple-A Salt Lake in a corresponding move on Friday.

Donovan Walton

LAA 2nd Baseman #18

Angels selected the contract of INF Donovan Walton from Triple-A Salt Lake.

With Yoán Moncada landing on the injured list, Walton will get his first opportunity with the Angels this season. The 31-year-old infielder was hitting .282/.429/.481 with seven homers, 33 RBI and three stolen bases in 168 plate appearances at Triple-A Salt Lake. He’ll start at third base and bat ninth for the Angels on Friday night.
