The Athletic’s Will Sammon and Ken Rosenthal report the Mets have hired former Blue Jays manager John Gibbons as their next bench coach.
Gibbons spent 11 years combined over a pair of stints at the helm for the Blue Jays, with his final stint ending at the conclusion of the 2018 campaign. The 61-year-old former skipper adds some valuable experience for first-time manager Carlos Mendoza in New York.

Pete Alonso went 1-for-4 with one RBI and a walk in Baltimore’s 6-5 comeback win against the Blue Jays on Saturday.
The Orioles had just one run on three hits and trailed by four going into the ninth inning. The team would rally in the final frame, bringing four runs home and loading the bases with one out. Alonso stepped in and delivered the walk-off base hit to bring home the winning run, his first walk-off as an Oriole. The 31-year-old slugger is hitting .232/.315/.433 with 11 homers, 32 runs scored, and 35 RBI across 254 plate appearances.

  • TOR 1st Baseman #27
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went 4-for-5 with two runs scored against the Orioles on Saturday.
Guerrero had an excellent day at the plate, collecting a season-high four hits. He singled in the first inning, then led off the fourth with a base hit and scored a run. He added a single and a second run scored in the eighth before driving in a run with a double in the ninth. The 27-year-old first baseman raises his slash line to .305/.400/.394 with three homers, 35 runs scored, 24 RBI, and five steals across 240 plate appearances.
  • TOR Relief Pitcher #23
Jeff Hoffman gave up five runs in the ninth inning to take the loss against the Orioles on Saturday.
Louis Varland had shut down the heart of the Orioles lineup in the eighth inning before Hoffman took the mound with a four-run lead in the ninth. It didn’t go well. Hoffman struck out the first batter, then allowed the next six batters to reach, bringing three runs in and loading the bases. Connor Seabold took over and walked in a run before Pete Alonso walked it off with a base hit. Hoffman had been pitching better of late, making six straight scoreless appearances. Though Saturday’s implosion certainly won’t help his cause in retaking the closer role. Varland remains the reliever to roster in Toronto.
  • BAL Starting Pitcher #63
Brandon Young gave up two runs while striking out seven batters over 6 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Blue Jays on Saturday.
Young held the Blue Jays scoreless through three innings, then gave up two runs on three hits in the fourth. That would be the only damage against Young as he went on to pitch into the seventh, leaving with two outs in the inning at 86 pitches. He struck out a season-high seven batters on 13 whiffs. The 27-year-old right-hander will take a 3.35 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, and a 33/17 K/BB ratio into a rematch against the Blue Jays in Toronto on Friday.
  • TOR Starting Pitcher #39
Trey Yesavage allowed one run and struck out four batters over five innings in a no-decision against the Orioles on Saturday.
Yesavage tossed two scoreless innings before the Orioles broke through with a run on two walks and a hit in the third. Yesavage would go two more scoreless frames, ending his day after five with four strikeouts. He was fortunate not to come out of this one with more damage, as he issued a career-high seven walks. The 22-year-old right-hander will take a 2.19 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and a 39/17 K/BB ratio across 37 innings into a start against the Braves in Atlanta on Thursday.
  • CLE Left Fielder #1
Angel Martínez will undergo an MRI after leaving Saturday’s game with left foot inflammation.
Martínez said the problem developed earlier in the week and that he aggravated it today. If he’s forced to the injured list, the Guardians could call up CJ Kayfus or George Valera to step in as a left fielder against right-handers.
  • BAL Catcher #29
Samuel Basallo thinks he’ll OK after walking off the field clutching at his shoulder in the ninth inning Saturday.
Basallo said he would have been able to bat again if needed Rather than the shoulder, he said he felt a pinch in his upper chest while taking a swing at a pitch in the bottom of the ninth against the Blue Jays. It didn’t look good, but apparently, it’s crisis averted.
  • NYM 1st Baseman #29
Jared Young went 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored in a 6-1 win over the Marlins on Saturday.
Young started at designated hitter on Saturday against the Marlins. He knocked a base hit and scored a run in the fourth inning, then went yard for the first time this season with a solo homer off Lake Bachar to lead off the sixth. The 30-year-old first baseman doesn’t carry the most upside for fantasy purposes, but should continue to get regular starts against right-handed pitching while hitting in the heart of the Mets lineup.
  • MIA Catcher #34
Liam Hicks went 3-for-4 with one RBI against the Mets on Saturday.
Hicks had cooled down significantly in May, coming into Saturday’s game hitting .211 in the month after hitting .315 through April. He’s ending the month on a good note, collecting three hits against the Mets while driving in the team’s only run. The 26-year-old is hitting an excellent .274/.347/.478 with 11 homers, 27 runs scored, and 45 RBI across 213 plate appearances.
  • NYM Starting Pitcher #45
Christian Scott gave up one run while striking out eight batters over five innings in a win over the Marlins on Saturday.
Scott had another excellent outing on Saturday, keeping the Marlins off the board over four innings before giving up one run on a walk and a hit in the fifth. He’d complete the fifth inning at 96 pitches while matching a season-high with eight strikeouts. The 26-year-old right-hander ends the day with a 2.97 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, and a 38/16 K/BB ratio across 30 1/3 innings. He’ll look to keep it going against the Padres in San Diego on Friday.
