    Pirates released 3B Joe Perez.
Perez got into exactly one game for the Astros back in 2022 and hasn’t gotten back to the majors ever since. The 24-year-old former second-round pick from the 2017 MLB Draft signed a minor league deal with Pittsburgh last August and posted a lackluster .640 OPS with six homers and two steals in 69 games this season between Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis.

Ketel Marte went 2-for-5 on Wednesday helping lead the Diamondbacks to a narrow 3-2 win over the Giants.
    Sabathia digs into baseball superstitions
CC Sabathia and Ahmed Fareed weigh in on baseball superstitions, including ones from CC's playing days and a quirky routine he never forgot about one of his former teammates in New York.
  • SF 2nd Baseman #1
Luis Arraez went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and also stole a base in Wednesday’s loss to the Diamondbacks.
Arraez was responsible for San Francisco’s lone runs of the contest when he smacked a two-run single to left-center field against Diamondbacks starter Michael Soroka in the third inning. The 29-year-old’s latest multi-hit effort raises his batting average to .325 through 53 games in his Giants debut. He’s been especially hot of late, hitting .352 (31-for-88) with two homers, nine RBI and one steal since the start of May.
  • SF Designated Hitter #10
Casey Schmitt went 0-for-4 with a stolen base during Wednesday’s loss to the Diamondbacks.
Schmitt was held hitless for the first time in four games as his sizzling-hot stretch came to an end after three multi-hit performances during that span. The 27-year-old has homered four times in his last seven games and left the yard a whopping eight times in 23 games since the start of May. He’s making significantly more hard contact, barreling the ball at a career-best rate, and getting it in the air more frequently this season, which has fueled his recent power surge.
  • AZ Relief Pitcher #38
Paul Sewald fired a perfect ninth inning on Wednesday against the Giants to record his 14th save of the season.
Sewald got the call to protect a one-run lead and needed just 12 pitches (eight strikes) to spin a drama-free frame. He got red-hot Casey Schmitt to pop out before striking out Rafael Devers and coaxing a harmless fly out from Matt Chapman to end it. The 36-year-old veteran has converted 14 of 15 save chances to go along with a strong 3.80 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 24/6 K/BB ratio across 21 1/3 innings of work.
  • AZ Starting Pitcher #34
Michael Soroka allowed two runs over six innings on Wednesday in a win over the Giants.
Soroka struck out three, didn’t hand out a free pass and needed just 83 pitches (60 strikes) to complete six frames and pick up his seventh win of the year. The 28-year-old has allowed two earned runs or fewer in five consecutive starts and nine of his first 11 outings during his Diamondbacks debut this season. He’s been one of the more pleasant surprises in among the consensus late-round dart throw tier in fantasy drafts earlier this spring. He’s in line for a challenging matchup his next time out against the Dodgers on Tuesday.
  • SF Starting Pitcher #72
Trevor McDonald was charged with three runs — two earned — over 6 1/3 innings on Wednesday in a loss to the Diamondbacks.
McDonald certainly deserved better in this one as he limited Arizona to just three runs while working into the seventh inning for the third time in five starts since joining San Francisco’s rotation back on May 4. He finished with six strikeouts and only issued two walks. It was an encouraging rebound effort after being tagged for seven runs over 3 2/3 innings against the White Sox his last time out. He’s posted a respectable 4.34 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 27/6 K/BB ratio across 29 innings of work. There’s a strong possibility he’s the odd-man out with Giants ace Logan Webb (knee) returning from the injured list later this week.
  • TEX Left Fielder #36
Wyatt Langford (forearm) took on-field batting practice on Wednesday at Globe Life Field.
It was Langford’s first time taking on-field batting practice since hitting the injured list with a right forearm strain back in late April. There’s optimism he’ll progresses to facing live pitching on Friday before heading out on a minor league rehab assignment. There’s a chance he’s ready to return at some point in early June.
  • SEA Starting Pitcher #36
Logan Gilbert blanked the A’s for six innings in Mariners’ 9-1 victory on Wednesday.
Gilbert joined Nathan Eovaldi and teammate Emerson Hancock as the only pitchers so far this season to pitch at least six scoreless innings in a start at Sutter Health Park. No A’s pitcher has done it. Gilbert has pitched scoreless ball in three of his last four starts, though he unfortunately gave up seven runs in his other start during the stretch. He’s 3-4 with a 3.69 ERA and a 69/16 K/BB in 68 1/3 innings, and he’s due to pitch at home against the Mets next time out.
  • ATH Starting Pitcher #59
Jeffrey Springs yielded five runs — two earned — in five innings Wednesday in a loss to the Mariners.
The unearned runs came in the first after Jeff McNeil’s error with two outs extended the inning for Rob Refsnyder to hit a three-run homer. However, things never would have gotten started in the first place if Springs hadn’t been slow to cover first base on J.P. Crawford’s infield single to begin the inning. Springs struck out seven on the day. His ERA dropped ever so slightly to 4.07, but he’s now 3-6 this season. He’ll face the Cubs at Wrigley next week.
  • SEA Designated Hitter #30
Rob Refsnyder hit a three-run homer to start the scoring for the Mariners in their 9-1 win over the A’s on Wednesday.
Refsnyder’s third homer was a 368-footer that would have stayed in play in 15 of the 30 parks. Mariners manager Dan Wilson has been getting criticism for sticking with Refsnyder against lefties amid a horrible start to his season. Even after today, the 35-year-old Refsnyder is hitting just .122/.200/.243 in 85 plate appearances.
