  • CHC Designated Hitter #25
Moisés Ballesteros is not in the Cubs’ starting lineup for Friday night’s tilt against the Cardinals.
The 22-year-old has been mired in a prolonged slump at the dish, so giving him a night off to clear his head isn’t the worst possible idea. Michael Conforto will serve as the team’s designated hitter in his place and will bat seventh against Cardinals’ right-hander Andre Pallante on Friday evening in St. Louis.
  • LAA Designated Hitter #12
Jorge Soler is not in the Angels’ starting lineup for Friday’s series opener against the Rays in Tampa Bay.
It appears to be nothing more than a routine evening off for the 34-year-old slugger. Mike Trout will serve as the designated hitter in his absence while Jose Siri will start in center field and bat ninth for the Halos against Rays’ right-hander Nick Martinez.
  • MIA Relief Pitcher
Marlins recalled RHP Josh Ekness from Triple-A Jacksonville.
Ekness, 24, has done a nice job in his limited action with the Marlins this season, registering a 1.69 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and a 5/5 K/BB ratio across 5 1/3 innings in his six appearances. Expect him to be utilized in a middle relief role.
  • MIA Starting Pitcher #39
Marlins placed RHP Eury Pérez on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to May 28, with a right hamstring strain.

Josh Ekness was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville to provide a fresh bullpen arm for a few days until the Marlins decide how to fill Pérez’s spot in the rotation.
  • MIA 3rd Baseman #21
Marlins optioned 3B Graham Pauley to Triple-A Jacksonville.
With Leo Jiménez (head) returning from the injured list on Friday, Pauley will return to an everyday role at the Triple-A level until his services are needed once more. The 25-year-old has hit just .165/.211/.271 with one homer and nine RBI in 91 plate appearances with the Marlins this season.
  • MIA 3rd Baseman #19

Graham Pauley was optioned back to Triple-A Jacksonville in a corresponding move on Friday.
  • KC Relief Pitcher #61
Royals recalled RHP Eric Cerantola from Triple-A Omaha.
The 26-year-old right-hander has made two appearances with the Royals so far this season, posting a 9.00 ERA, 2.00 WHIP and a 5/4 K/BB ratio over three innings of work. He’s taking the spot of Nick Mears who landed on the injured list with a right shoulder impingement on Friday. Expect Cerantola to work in a middle relief role for manager Matt Quatraro.
