Merrill Kelly allowed two runs -- one earned -- with three strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings in a loss to the Pirates on Saturday.
Kelly surrendered a two-run homer to Oneil Cruz in the second inning following a fielding error to put a man on base. He settled in to hold the Pirates from scoring again into the seventh, leaving with two runners on and two outs. He struck out three on the day. The 36-year-old right-hander will take a 3.22 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, and a 121/38 K/BB ratio across 128 2/3 innings into a start against the Athletics in Sacramento on Friday.

Astros designated C César Salazar for assignment.
The 30-year-old backstop had been functioning as the team’s primary backup behind Christian Vázquez with Yainer Diaz shelved, but he was just 1-for-18 (.056) with one RBI and a 3/3 K/BB ratio in his 22 plate appearances. Collin Price was promoted from Triple-A Sugar Land to take his spot on the team’s active and 40-man rosters.
Tolle making a name for himself
Red Sox pitcher Payton Tolle is displaying the stuff to be a strong fantasy baseball option.
  • HOU Left Fielder #16
Astros optioned OF Zach Cole to Triple-A Sugar Land.
Cole has struggled mightily in his limited action with the Astros this season, hitting .157/.189/.353 with three homers, eight RBI and a 21/1 K/BB ratio in his 53 plate appearances. LaMonte Wade was signed to a big league deal to take Cole’s spot on the club’s active roster on Thursday.
  • HOU Left Fielder
Astros designated OF Rhylan Thomas for assignment.
Thomas was just claimed off of waivers from the Mariners in mid-May, but he gets the boot from the Astros’ 40-man roster as they needed to free up a spot for the addition of LaMonte Wade Jr. on Thursday. The 26-year-old outfielder could once again drum up interest on waivers.
  • HOU Left Fielder #10
Astros activated OF Joey Loperfido from the 10-day injured list; optioned him to Triple-A Sugar Land.
Loperfido had been sidelined since April 18 due to a right quad strain. He had been on a minor league rehab assignment since May 23 and now will remain at Triple-A Sugar Land for the time being until a need for his services arises at the Major League level.
  • HOU 1st Baseman #35
Astros signed 1B/OF LaMonte Wade Jr. to a one-year contract.
The 32-year-old had hit .250/.420/.441 with seven homers in 201 plate appearances at Triple-A Charlotte before requesting his release from the White Sox on June 1. He’ll jump right into action with the Astros, starting in left field and batting fifth against Pirates’ right-hander Jared Jones on Thursday evening in Houston.
  • HOU Center Fielder #6
Jake Meyers is absent from the Astros’ starting lineup for Thursday’s tilt against the Pirates.
The 29-year-old outfielder had started each of the team’s previous five games in center field. Taylor Trammell will slide over and cover center field on Thursday evening while LaMonte Wade Jr. draws a start in left field and will bat fifth against Pirates’ right-hander Jared Jones.
  • NYY 2nd Baseman #13
Jazz Chisholm singled, hit a sacrifice fly, walked, and scored the go-ahead run in a 2-1 win over the Guardians on Thursday.
Chisholm stole second standing up against Codi Heuer in the seventh inning, then was plated on an RBI single by Ryan McMahon. The Jimmy Fallon bump, some are calling it. Chisholm is hitting .298/.359/.526 with three homers and three stolen bases over his last 15 games, upping his season line to .238/.313/.393 with seven homers and 15 stolen bases. We’d love to see a little more power, but he’s more or less holding serve with preseason expectations in fantasy baseball.
  • CLE Right Fielder #17
Stuart Fairchild singled in the lone Guardians run against the Yankees in a loss on Thursday.
He finished with only three at-bats, as the platoon option was pinch-hit for by Chase DeLauter late in the loss. No fantasy value here, just thought we’d give Fairchild his due as the rest of the Guardians mustered only one hit combined against Carlos Rodón.
  • NYY Relief Pitcher #53
David Bednar worked a 1-2-3 inning against the Guardians for his 13th save on Thursday.
Bednar notched three consecutive ground outs from Travis Bazzana, Angel Martínez, and Chase DeLauter to secure a 2-1 win for the Bronx Bombers. While the 4.32 ERA is a bit unsightly, Bednar’s xERA of 2.83 and 99th percentile chase rate are signs that he’s not really close to losing the job at this point. He is walking a few more batters than he did last year and his fastball velocity is slightly down.
  • MIN Designated Hitter #56
Josh Bell is not in the Twins’ starting lineup for Thursday evening’s battle against the Royals.
It appears to be nothing more than a routine night off for the 33-year-old slugger. Byron Buxton will function as the team’s designated hitter on Thursday while James Outman draws a start in center field and will bat ninth against Royals’ right-hander James Outman.
