ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that the Red Sox and Roman Anthony are finalizing an eight-year, $130 million contract extension.
Anthony has been exactly as advertised since being promoted from Triple-A Worcester, slashing .283/.400/.428 with two home runs, 27 runs scored, 19 RBI, and two steals in 46 games. He has also posted a 10.7 percent barrel rate, 58 percent hard-hit rate, and just a 9.9 percent swinging strike rate as a 21-year-old rookie. The long-term extension, which starts in 2026, will pay him just over $16 million per year, which is about what veterans Andrew Benintendi and Tyler O’Neill are making. It ostensibly buys out all of his arbitration-eligible seasons and a couple additional free agent years. Once this contract is finalized, the Red Sox will have Anthony, Kristian Campbell, Ceddanne Rafaela, and Brayan Bello all recently signed to long-term contracts.
