Cardinals recalled 2B César Prieto from Triple-A Memphis

Prieto is hitting .311/.357/.566 in 28 Triple-A games with six home runs and 19 runs scored. He has just a 90 mph average exit velocity and 40 percent hard-hit rate, so the underlying metrics aren’t supporting that level of slugging, especially with a 57 percent groundball rate. The 27-year-old will most likely just be a bench bat for now.

Reds recalled RHP Chase Petty from Triple-A Louisville.

The Reds have seven games this week and needed an extra starter before Nick Lodolo (blister) comes off the IL on Friday, so Petty is being called up for a spot start. The 23-year-old has a 4.38 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, and 29/11 K/BB ratio in 24 2/3 innings at Triple-A this season. The strikeouts could be there tonight, but the walk rate is a bit of a concern against a tough Cubs offense.

Brandon Woodruff

MIL Starting Pitcher #53

Brandon Woodruff (shoulder) will begin his throwing program this week.

Woodruff was placed on the injured list on May 1st with shoulder inflammation. The Brewers have said he will begin his throwing program near the end of this week while on the road trip. It’s unclear if he would also need to make a rehab assignment before returning.

Tarik Skubal

DET Starting Pitcher #29

The Detroit Free Press’ Evan Petzold reports that Tarik Skubal will undergo surgery to remove loose bodies in his elbow.

So much for him being scratched from his start for precautionary reasons. As of now, there is no set timeline for Skubal’s absence, but Edwin Diaz is being sidelined for three months after undergoing the same surgery. That means we could expect Skubal back in August as a best-case scenario. That’s a brutal blow for the Tigers and fantasy managers, and, potentially, Skubal’s free agent market. Sawyer Gipson-Long could be called up to take his place in the starting rotation.

Caleb Durbin

BOS 3rd Baseman #5
Caleb Durbin is not in the Red Sox starting lineup on Monday against the Tigers.

Durbin is 2-for-18 in his last five games, and his debut season with the Red Sox has not gone as expected. Andruw Monasterio will play third base and bat ninth, and Durbn can be dropped in all 12-team leagues and shallower.

Tarik Skubal

DET Starting Pitcher #29

MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reports that Tarik Skubal has been scratched from his start on Monday against the Red Sox for “precautionary” reasons.

Heyman didn’t give a reason for Skubal being scratched but said the “hope and belief is that he will be OK.” That seems to indicate some sort of injury, and we did see Skubal step off the mound and grab his throwing arm in the seventh inning of his last start. However, this game was also moved up due to inclement weather, so maybe the Tigers didn’t want their ace to be on the mound in poor weather conditions coming off an injury scare. We’ll have to wait for more news.

Joe Mack

MIA Catcher #80

Marlins selected the contract of C Joe Mack from Triple-A Jacksonville

Mack is the 54th-ranked prospect in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline. A lot of that value comes from his defense, which is stellar. He’s hitting .244/.388/.378 in Triple-A with three home runs, one steal, and a 22/20 K/BB ratio. Mack hit 21 home runs and stole 9 bases in 112 minor league games last year, while hitting .257, so maybe he profiles as a .240 with 10-15 home runs and 3-4 steals the rest of the way? That’s likely more of a two-catcher league target.

Agustín Ramírez

MIA Catcher #50

Marlins optioned C Agustín Ramírez to Triple-A Jacksonville.

This move was reported yesterday and is now official. Ramírez has really struggled as a catcher, but he has a 10 percent barrel rate over his career and makes a good amount of contact. He needs to learn to take a few more walks, but his bat could play at another position if the Marlins wanted to give him a shot at first base while he’s in the minors. He likely does not have a future as an MLB catcher.
