Giants signed RB Najee Harris to a one-year deal.

Harris visited the Giants on Monday and the connection is obvious with Greg Roman on the coaching staff after he was the OC with the Chargers, where Harris played last year. The Giants maybe aren’t the ideal landing spot with Cam Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy and Devin Singletary all healthy at the moment. Harris should work as the RB3 with occasional opportunities to cut into Skattebo’s workload.

This comes two weeks after The Athletic’s Dan Duggan said the team could look to add a veteran running back before the team’s season opener. Harris, 28, suffered a torn Achilles in Week 3 of last season and has been working toward a return. He met with the Raiders earlier this offseason and will now meet with the Giants, who have a relatively crowded backfield with Cam Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy, and a proven vet in Devin Singletary. If Harris were to join the Giants, we would expect him to work behind both Skattebo and Tracy.

Duggan buried this thought in a lengthy social media post last Wednesday. He says Giants RBs Cam Skattebo and Tyrone Tracy “are fine,” but notes that the front office was “open to upgrading to a premier back,” referring to Cardinals rookie RB Jeremiyah Love. Duggan “could see a vet signing,” like free agent RB Najee Harris (Achilles) once he is healthy, “or a trade.” A veteran like Harris would slide into the RB3 role, and might occasionally steal enough touches to hurt Skattebo’s weekly ceiling outcomes. A premier back would have a much larger impact, but a player like that would obviously be much harder to acquire at this point. That outcome seems far less likely at this point, but it wouldn’t be surprising if the Giants added another name to the backfield.

Harris visited the Seahawks last week as well. The 28-year-old running back is generating interest as he progresses through his rehab program. He suffered a season-ending Achilles tendon rupture in the Chargers’ Week 3 win over the Broncos last year. During his short 2025 season, he rushed 15 times for 61 yards and caught 3-of-3 targets for 25 yards.

Harris visited with the Seahawks on Wednesday and now has a visit with the Raiders on tap. The 28-year-old running back is still recovering from a torn Achilles he suffered last season, but has been seen running at full speed in recent videos. While Harris will need to be able to do more than run in a straight line when he returns to football activities, the veteran running back is clearly trending in the right direction ahead of training camp. Harris would operate as the clear RB2 in Vegas behind Ashton Jeanty if he were to join the Raiders, but could find a role in head coach Klint Kubiak’s offense, given Kubiak’s tendency to utilize multiple backs. Harris rushed 15 times for 61 scoreless yards before his injury last season, but strung together four-straight 1,000-yard campaigns with the Steelers to start his career.

A vacuum in need is a vacuum indeed, and with Kenneth Walker gone, Emanuel Wilson is likely the No. 1 back on the depth chart at this point in the offseason. Harris missed most of last season with a torn Achilles after a 15/61 rushing line in a few weeks with the Chargers. He’s somehow still only 28. It is a fit that makes sense from the outside if the Seahawks are comfortable with Harris’ medicals. Ian Rapoport reports that Harris plans to visit the Raiders in the near future.

In a video posted to social media, Harris was reportedly “running with ease at 15 MPH.” The veteran running back still has a long way to go in his recovery since going down in Week 3 of last season, but with free agency looming, Harris is hoping to prove to a team that he’s worth taking a chance on this upcoming season. Whether or not he’ll sign before fully healthy is unknown, but Harris, 27, should have plenty of suitors lining up to bring him in on a one-year prove-it deal this offseason.
  • LAC Running Back #22
Harbaugh didn’t leave much to the imagination following Sunday’s game when he said preliminary tests indicated a torn Achilles for Harris, who went down on a non-contact play. It’s a season-ender for the 27-year-old running back whose 2025 challenges began with a fireworks accident on July 4th. Harris signed a one-year contract with the Chargers this offseason and sees his season come to an end with a 15-61-0 rushing line to go with three receptions for 25 scoreless yards. Harris will be a free agent this offseason and could be faced with having to sign a one-year prove-it deal wherever he lands next.
  • LAC Running Back #22
Harris is undergoing imaging to confirm, but speaking after Sunday’s game, Harbaugh didn’t hesitate to say what the team expects to learn. Harris went down with a non-contact injury in the second quarter while taking a handoff from Justin Herbert and was eventually helped to the sideline. A torn Achilles would be a season ender for the veteran running back who signed a one-year contract with the Chargers this offseason. We would expect to have a more definite answer on Harris’ injury soon.
  • LAC Running Back #22
Harris’ left leg collapsed as he pushed off to accept a handoff from Justin Herbert in the second quarter. He was down on the turf for several minutes before being helped to the sideline. It would be surprising if Harris returned anytime soon, or if he played at all for the rest of this season after an apparently serious injury. Omarion Hampton will likely see a small bump in touches with Harris out.
  • LAC Running Back #22
After touching the ball just twice in Week 1, Harris was more involved in the gameplan Monday, and he ended up with 10 touches in Week 2 compared to Omarion Hampton’s nine. It’s also worth noting that Hampton had a late fumble, so Harris finished the game and clinched the win with a seven-yard gain on third down. This is a tough backfield to figure out right now, but it still seems like Hampton will be the leadback even with the turnovers against the Broncos in Week 3.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Quentin Johnston (undisclosed) is not expected to miss much, if any, practice time.

Johnston limped off at today’s 49ers-Chargers joint practice but it seems like this isn’t serious. A source told Schefter that Johnston was “totally fine.”

Colts CB Charvarius Ward (back) is sidelined indefinitely.

Ward was contemplating retirement this offseason due to a scary amount of documented concussions, but gave it a go at training camp only to wind up missing tons of time due to this back injury. The 30-year-old will start for the Colts if he’s healthy for Week 1, but that sounds like an open question at this time.

The Athletic’s James Boyd left DJ Giddens off his 53-man roster projection.

It’s been hard to find a good word from a beat on Giddens this offseason, so this isn’t an overly surprising conclusion to see listed out. He’s been sidelined for most of camp with a hamstring injury. The Colts look like they’ll keep Seth McGowan as their main backup to Jonathan Taylor. In this projection, Giddens loses the third running back spot to Ulysses Bentley IV.

Seahawks RB jadarian Price (upper-leg soreness) returned to full participation in practice on Monday.

Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said after the drills Monday that Price “isn’t fully unleashed for unlimited work, and that his practice participation will ramp up some.” The News Tribune’s Gregg Bell believes Price will be the lead back in Week 1. It sounds like he’s going to be healthy for the opener as things sit right now; we’ll see how things shake out in preseason Week 2 before we go making sweeping declarations.

Commanders placed RB Jerome Ford on injured reserve.

No word on what the injury was; it’s possible Ford is released with an injury settlement and resurfaces elsewhere this year. Not being close to making the Commanders depth chart at running back is ... a bleak endorsement of Ford’s future prospects. He’ll look to catch on elsewhere.

Jalen McMillan (leg) returned to practice on Tuesday.

He was sidelined for a little over two weeks. McMillan is being treated like an afterthought in drafts, going off the board behind Cooper Kupp in the WR6 ranks. McMillan had a nine-target game last year despite missing most of the season and is still just 24 years old. Even with the Ted Hurst hype coming out of camp, there’s a chance for McMillan to be a useful spot starter in fantasy leagues this year.

Broncos coach Sean Payton said he pulled Jonah Coleman from the team’s first preseason game early because he “didn’t need additional evidence of what I’ve been seeing for three weeks.’'

It sure seems like Coleman is going to have a real role in the Broncos muddy backfield from the start of the season on. Coleman had four carries for 24 yards in the first quarter. His ascendance could cap ceilings for JK Dobbins and RJ Harvey assuming all three backs are healthy. Coleman’s worthy of a roster spot in most 12-team leagues at this point.

Ravens DT Nnamdi Madubuike remains “very limited as to what he’s doing in practice.”

The Athletic’s Jeff Zrebiec notes that Madubuike “mostly takes part in the team stretch, does some light individual work with a coach or athletic trainer and then heads to another field for conditioning. He hasn’t done anything that involves significant contact, including striking the blocking sled.” It’s certainly possible that Madubuike takes into the regular season to be ready to play football again based on this update, even if it is good news that he’s going through a ramp up. Zrebiec mentions that Madubuike could be a candidate for an IR-return spot.

    Giants released WR JuJu Smith-Schuster.

He wasn’t healthy for much of training camp and apparently wasn’t needed to help further teach the Matt Nagy offense to the Giants. Smith-Schuster is just veteran depth at this point of his career, he’ll try to catch on elsewhere before the season starts.

Travis Hunter took zero 11-on-11 reps on offense on Monday.

It was suggested by Sports Illustrated’s John Shipley that the Jaguars could be “tipping their hand” here, as he writes “it is clear the Jaguars believe they need to devote more practice time with Hunter before Week 1 at cornerback, which could be the biggest signal yet that the majority of his snaps against the Cleveland Browns on Sept. 13 will be at cornerback.” Hunter will likely still be involved in the offense — he has worked with the offense every day before this — but it is notable that there was a shift here. Hunter will likely be just a dart throw WR5/WR6 in most standard leagues this year.
