The World No. 1901, making his pro debut on the PGA TOUR, was 7-under thru 15 holes when play was suspended due to darkness, and returned Friday morning, along with 29 others, and finished par, birdie (from 24'9") and par. This is his tourney debut, and fourth overall TOUR event, first since a missed cut in 2019 at the Memorial (75-77), also on a sponsor invite. The Ohio State alum’s previous-best position after any round was T26 following R2 at the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock, where he eventually finished a career-TOUR-best 66th (73-72-78-80), and was one of three amateurs (of 20) that made the cut in Southhampton, New York. On nine (of 14) fairways and 11 greens in regulation, he ticked one eagle-3 (hole-out from 67 yards) and six birdies, posting 3.140 SG: Putting and 2.530 SG: Tee-to-Green. The 24-year-old’s birdie split featured two conventional conversions from between 11 and 25 feet, holed out from 31'10" for birdie-3 at 17, and also saved par two times from between six and 10 feet. This was his ninth TOUR round and first under-par score, brushing aside a prior-best 2-over 72/R2 at the aforementioned U.S. Open.

Grimmer had a busy scorecard on day one, trading three birdies with six bogeys to post a 3-over 73. The youngster was more steady today, splitting 13 (of 14) fairways en route to 10 GIRs. Adding to his precision, Grimmer also knocked in four putts from outside nine feet, including a 26'2" birdie bomb at the par-4 15th. “Going into this week, my goal was to make the cut and the play all four days.” Mission accomplished for the Ohio State Buckeye who is making his second career appearance on the big stage (MC at the 2014 U.S. Open). Despite there being a large list of 20 amateurs in the field, Grimmer was one of just three to make the cut this week, joining Matt Parziale (+7) and Luis Gagne (+7). This trio will duke it out for two more days to see who walks away as low amateur.
