The World No. 1901, making his pro debut on the PGA TOUR, was 7-under thru 15 holes when play was suspended due to darkness, and returned Friday morning, along with 29 others, and finished par, birdie (from 24'9") and par. This is his tourney debut, and fourth overall TOUR event, first since a missed cut in 2019 at the Memorial (75-77), also on a sponsor invite. The Ohio State alum’s previous-best position after any round was T26 following R2 at the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock, where he eventually finished a career-TOUR-best 66th (73-72-78-80), and was one of three amateurs (of 20) that made the cut in Southhampton, New York. On nine (of 14) fairways and 11 greens in regulation, he ticked one eagle-3 (hole-out from 67 yards) and six birdies, posting 3.140 SG: Putting and 2.530 SG: Tee-to-Green. The 24-year-old’s birdie split featured two conventional conversions from between 11 and 25 feet, holed out from 31'10" for birdie-3 at 17, and also saved par two times from between six and 10 feet. This was his ninth TOUR round and first under-par score, brushing aside a prior-best 2-over 72/R2 at the aforementioned U.S. Open.
