In the first inning of Sunday’s Opening Night contest against the Royals, Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes whiffed on a fly ball to left field hit by Mike Moustakas. Catcher Travis d’Arnaud then straight up missed a fastball from starter Matt Harvey, allowing Moustakas to advance to second base. Harvey walked Lorenzo Cain, then yielded an RBI single to left field to Eric Hosmer to give the Royals an early 1-0 lead.
If the Mets came into Opening Night expecting to avenge their 2015 World Series loss to the Royals, things aren’t exactly starting off the way they expected.
Cespedes drew a lot of attention early in spring training, showing up in fancy cars and buying a hog. If the Mets go on to lose Sunday night’s game to the Royals, expect some columns about how Cespedes is supposedly getting complacent after signing a big contract.
