Deron Williams scores season-high 30 points vs. Portland (VIDEO)

There was a time, only five years ago, when “Who’s the best point guard in the NBA: Chris Paul or Deron Williams?” was a legitimate discussion. Then, the Jazz traded Williams to the Nets and things haven’t gone well for him since then—he’s been injured, and mostly disappointing when he has played, and clashed with coach after coach. This summer’s buyout agreement with Brooklyn was best for both sides, and Williams signed in Dallas, where he’s from, on a two-year, $10 million deal.

It’s early and things could change, but so far, the move has been exactly what Williams’ career needed. His counting stats haven’t been dramatically better (13.9 points and 5.6 assists per game is about in line with what he’s averaged the past few seasons in Brooklyn), but he’s looked more comfortable than he has in years.

On Tuesday night, in Dallas’ 115-112 overtime road win over the Portland Trail Blazers, Williams looked like his vintage self, scoring a season-high 30 points along with 6 rebounds and 8 assists.
