Gustavo Ayon earns FIBA Americas MVP

ayon bucks

It’s been a summer of uncertainty for Gustavo Ayon, who had his option picked up by the Bucks in June, only to see the team waive him a month later.

The Hawks claimed Ayon off waivers shortly thereafter, and if his performance for Mexico in the FIBA Americas tournament ends up being any indication, Atlanta may have gotten a steal of a big man talent once all was said and done.

From Jaryd Wilson of the Hawks Basketblog:

Gustavo Ayón and Mexico completed their improbable run to the FIBA Americas Championship game with a 91-89 win over Puerto Rico Wednesday night.

Ayón scored 20 points and pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds to complete a magnificent individual tournament performance that crowned him MVP.

Ayón also made the all-tournament team, averaging 17.2 points and 8.4 rebounds.

It was the first time that Mexico has won the gold in 35 years, and with the win, Mexico qualifies for the World Championships in 2014.
