The Bills are casting a wide net when it comes to searching for their next head coach. But not wide enough to encompass the man who won six Super Bowls with a division rival.
Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Bills are not interested in Bill Belichick.
At one level, it’s surprising. If the Bills are going to interview someone like Philip Rivers for the job, why not kick the tires on the Tar Heels head coach? At a not-much-deeper level, Belichick has morphed from GOAT in a good way to goat in the usual sense.
He’s currently regarded as radioactive by most NFL teams looking for coaches. And he has only himself to blame, thanks to the bizarre distractions he created in North Carolina over the past year and his open hostility toward his long-time employer in New England. Any NFL owner who would be inclined to hire Belichick would have to assume that, eventually, some of that same venom will be directed to his next former team.
Before it even gets to that, the current employees of the football operation would have to worry about Belichick showing up and taking over, firing long-time employees and bringing in his own people (like Lombo). That’s what apparently derailed Belichick’s candidacy with the Falcons in 2024, after he was fired by the Patriots.
And so here we are. Three full hiring cycles. One interview for Bill Belichick. And no indication that he’ll ever have another chance to chase Don Shula — or to fend off Andy Reid — on the all-time wins list.
Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White picked up a costly penalty in the divisional round loss to the Broncos, and now his reaction to that penalty has cost him in his paycheck as well.
The NFL has announced that it fined White $14,222 for his outburst at the official who flagged him for pass interference in overtime.
Officially, the NFL said White was fined for “Unsportsmanlike Conduct: Removal of the helmet.”
White was also given an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the field, which moved the ball half the distance to the goal line and made the Broncos’ game-winning field goal that much easier, after White’s pass interference penalty had already moved them into easy field goal range.
White said after the game that “Referees just don’t know ball.”
The Bills interviewed Commanders run game coordinator and running backs coach Anthony Lynn on Saturday, the team announced.
Lynn finished his second season with Washington in those roles in 2025.
He worked on Buffalo’s staff under head coach Rex Ryan in 2015-16 . He was promoted to assistant head coach/offensive coordinator two weeks into the 2016 season after Greg Roman’s firing.
He finished that season as the interim head coach for the season finale, a 30-10 loss to the Jets.
In 2017, Lynn was a finalist for the Bills’ head coaching job, which went to Sean McDermott.
The Chargers hired Lynn during that same hiring cycle, and he went 33-31, including a 1-1 playoff record, in four seasons.
Lynn served as the Lions’ offensive coordinator in 2021 before two seasons as the assistant head coach and running backs coach in San Francisco.
The Bills also have Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady, former Giants head coach Brian Daboll, Colts quarterback Philip Rivers, Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo and Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski as candidates to replace Sean McDermott.
The Patriot Way could be coming to Sin City.
Several weeks after a rumor made the rounds of Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores (as head coach) and former Giants head coach Brian Daboll (as offensive coordinator) taking their talents to Las Vegas, it’s possible that Daboll will be the one who gets the gig.
Via multiple reports, the Raiders have interviewed Daboll for the team’s head-coaching vacancy.
Daboll had two separate stints with the Patriots during Raiders minority owner Tom Brady’s time in New England. A defensive assistant in 2000 and 2001, Daboll became the receivers coach from 2002 through 2006. He returned as tight ends coach from 2013 to 2016. In all, Daboll won five Super Bowl rings there.
The Flores possibility fizzled. The reasons for that aren’t clear. One explanation could be related to the blunt comments recently offered by former Vikings assistant coach Mike Pettine.
Daboll recently interviewed with the Bills, too. Some regard him as a favorite there, given his past work with quarterback Josh Allen, during Daboll’s four years as offensive coordinator, from 2018 to 2021.
Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver completed his head coaching interview with the Bills on Saturday, the team announced.
Weaver had second interviews with the Steelers and the Ravens, though Baltimore hired Jesse Minter as its new head coach. He remains in the mix in Pittsburgh.
Weaver has served as the Dolphins’ defensive coordinator for the past two seasons. He previously was the Bills’ defensive line coach in 2013.
Weaver has also worked for the Jets (2012), Browns (2014-15), Texans (2016-20) and Ravens (2021-23). He was the defensive coordinator for the Texans in 2020.
The Bills also have Commanders running backs coach/run game coordinator Anthony Lynn, Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady, former Giants head coach Brian Daboll, Colts quarterback Philip Rivers, Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo and Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski as candidates to replace Sean McDermott.
