The Panthers added a linebacker to their 53-man roster on Tuesday.
Jacoby Windmon has been signed off of the Steelers practice squad. The Panthers had an open roster spot after putting center Austin Corbett on injured reserve over the weekend.
Windmon signed with the Steelers after going undrafted in April. He was waived in late August and returned to the practice squad a couple of weeks ago.
The Panthers also announced that they have signed linebacker Shaq Quarterman to their practice squad. He spent his first four seasons with the Jaguars and spent time with the Eagles and Chargers earlier this year.
Rookie running back Jonathon Brooks may be in the Panthers lineup soon.
Brooks tore his ACL while playing at Texas last season and the Panthers put the second-round pick on the non-football injury list at the start of training camp. During a Monday press conference, head coach Dave Canales said that the team plans to open up his practice window this week.
“He’s checked all the boxes in terms of his getting back to being able to practice, so we’re hoping to open that window today,” Canales said.
Canales declined to speculate on what kind of role Brooks would be in line for and said the team would see how he does in practice before making any plans on that front. Chuba Hubbard leads the team with 86 carries for 485 yards and two touchdowns.
The Falcons didn’t match the 550 yards they put up in their Week Five win over the Buccaneers, but their offense continued to be tough to stop in Sunday’s game against the Panthers.
Bijan Robinson ran for 95 yards and two scores while Tyler Allgeier posted 105 yards and another touchdown to pave the way to a 38-20 road win. The Falcons finished their third straight win with 198 rushing yards and 423 overall yards.
The Falcons only had one rushing touchdown in the first five weeks of the season, but the Panthers had no answer for the Atlanta ground attack. They also let Drake London and Kyle Pitts to get free for nine catches and 144 yards between them.
London caught Kirk Cousins’s only touchdown pass of the afternoon and the offensive effort is pretty much what the Falcons were dreaming up this offseason. After a 10-point outing in the opener, they have now scored 139 points over the last five weeks and that kind of output will give them a chance to win pretty much every week.
They’ll try to keep things rolling at home against a Seahawks team that has been struggling defensively in recent weeks, so the offensive explosion might not be stopping any time soon.
The Panthers hung tight for the first half thanks to a pair of Andy Dalton touchdown passes, but the defense’s inability to get off the field limited their opportunities in the second half and an A.J. Terrell interception in the fourth quarter helped ensure the game would remain out of Carolina’s reach.
Week Seven will send the Panthers to Washington to face a Commanders team that saw its four-game winning streak come to an end in Baltimore on Sunday.
The Falcons looked like they were about to pull away from the Panthers late in the first half of Sunday’s game in Charlotte, but quarterback Andy Dalton was able to come up with an impressive drive.
After a Drake London touchdown catch made the score 22-10 Falcons, Dalton hit wide receiver Jalen Coker and tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders with three passes that picked up 42 yards. Dalton then scrambled for 18 yards to set up a seven-yard touchdown pass to rookie wide receiver Xavier Legette with seven seconds to play in the second quarter.
The result is a 22-17 halftime lead for the Falcons and Atlanta has the ball coming out of the break.
Dalton is 16-of-22 for 138 yards and two touchdowns while Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins is 10-of-17 for 119 yards through the first 30 minutes. Bijan Robinson ran for the other two Falcons touchdowns and has eight carries for 41 yards on the day.
Wide receiver Diontae Johnson was listed as questionable to play against the Falcons on Sunday, but he got the green light to go and the Panthers are happy to have him.
Johnson caught three passes for 46 yards on the second Panthers possession of the first quarter and the third of those catches went for a 10-yard touchdown. The Panthers lead 7-0 with 5:56 to go in the opening quarter as a result.
Andy Dalton is 6-of-9 for 66 yards through the first two Panthers drives and the Panthers defense forced a three-and-out after a pair of Kirk Cousins incompletions.
The Falcons will hope that better luck the second time around extends to them as well.
