Chargers edge rusher Joey Bosa had a limited practice Wednesday with a back injury.
He has not had any injury luck the past two seasons, playing only 14 total games. Bosa made the last of his four Pro Bowls in 2021 when he had 10.5 sacks.
He broke his hand in an Aug. 4 joint practice with the Rams that required surgery to repair the fracture but played 40 of 60 snaps in the season opener.
Bosa had seven tackles, a sack and two quarterback sacks against the Raiders.
He has 67 sacks in his career.
Safety Alohi Gilman (knee) and cornerback Ja’sir Taylor (fibula) did not practice. Running back Hassan Haskins (toe), outside linebacker Khalil Mack (rest), receiver Joshua Palmer (knee) and linebacker Denzel Perryman (thigh) were limited.
Cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. (shoulder) and cornerback Tarheeb Still (hip) were full participants.
The Chargers won’t be coming back to Los Angeles after facing the Panthers this Sunday.
Week Three has them heading to Pittsburgh to face the Steelers and head coach Jim Harbaugh said on Wednesday that the team will stay in Charlotte to prepare for that game.
“I think it’s a great time to do it,” Harbaugh said. “It’s not the most ideal thing. Everybody would rather be sleeping in their own bed, in their own house. The 1:00 Eastern Time kickoff really necessitates — that’s 10 o’clock our body time — getting acclimated to that. Plus you take out the 20 or so hours of travel time. Other benefits, let’s just focus on our football.”
Harbaugh said he thinks the trip will be a good one because “it’s a team that enjoys each other’s company” and they’ll be spending plenty of it together between their next two games.
The Panthers have placed defensive tackle Derrick Brown on injured reserve, the team announced on Tuesday.
Brown suffered a knee injury during the season-opening loss to the Saints. Brown’s timeline for return is currently unclear, though he could be out for the rest of 2024.
Head coach Dave Canales said during his news conference on Monday that Brown is seeking a second opinion before deciding whether or not to have surgery. Canales noted that Brown’s absence will create “big shoes to fill.”
A first-round pick in 2020, Brown recorded 103 total tackles in 2023, registering seven tackles for loss and 15 quarterback hits. He also had an interception and six passes defense.
Additionally, the Panthers waived outside linebacker Jamie Sheriff.
With two spots available, the Panthers signed Lonnie Johnson and Mike Boone to the 53-man roster off of the team’s practice squad. Boone’s signing was reported earlier on Tuesday.
The Panthers are adding a veteran running back to their 53-man roster.
Per Joe Person of TheAthletic.com, Carolina is signing Mike Boone off of its practice squad.
Boone, 29, was elevated off of the practice squad for the season-opening loss to New Orleans. He registered four carries for 7 yards — playing five offensive snaps and 19 special teams snaps.
He has appeared in 67 games with two starts for the Vikings, Broncos, Texans, and Panthers. Boone has rushed for 546 yards with four touchdowns and caught 25 passes for 186 yards.
Panthers quarterback Bryce Young was pressured throughout the team’s 47-10 loss to the Saints on Sunday and Carolina head coach Dave Canales said much of that falls on coaching.
Young was sacked four times with New Orleans registering five QB hits in the contest. In his Monday news conference, Canales said that some of reading the pressures falls on Young, but as the head coach, he and the rest of the staff did not provide Young enough help.
"[H]onestly, it’s on the coaching staff. It’s on us,” Canales said. “We sat there like we were sitting ducks. We didn’t do enough to put our guys — to give them simpler solutions in some of those. This is one of the best third-down pressure packages that you’re going to go against. We saw it Week 1. We’ve been against it before. We had a plan. [Dennis Allen] had counters. We got out coached in that regard. I take that personal.
“There was one that Bryce could have seen, and he could have flipped the protection. He’s been fantastic doing that. That’s the only one I would say that he could have really fixed the problem. [The Saints] gave us issues with what they did. We need to do better than that. That’s coaching.”
What does Canales mean that he takes it personal?
“For me, I take it personal any time that I feel like I’m putting our players at a disadvantage where they don’t have simple solutions,” Canales said.
In general, Canales said he thought Young had a “solid day” with his footwork.
“As we went through the grades, looking at his footwork and the discipline of it, it was there,” Canales said. “I think he missed a couple of throws. I think that he’s learning some of his guys, and we’ve gotten all these reps and we’ve got to keep accumulating those reps. But what I saw from him was just kind of missing a few of his opportunities that he had there, and I also have to give the Saints credit for covering us really well and they made it hard and it forced accurate throws and that’s something that we have to make sure we cash in on when we have those opportunities.”
Young ended the contest 13-of-30 for 161 yards with two interceptions.
Canales, Young, and the Panthers will try to turn things around when they host the Chargers on Sunday.
