The Jets closed the gap to seven points with a Justin Fields touchdown run in the third quarter, but the Dolphins didn’t waste any time stretching their lead back out.
Running back De’Von Achane scored on a nine-yard touchdown run that put the Dolphins up 24-10 with 5:20 to play in the third.
The Dolphins’ drive was aided by a major penalty by Jets rookie linebacker Kiko Mauigoa. Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa slid at the end of a third-down run and Mauigoa hit him in the head to draw an unnecessary roughness penalty. Tagovailoa’s slide was short of the sticks, so the penalty gave them a chance to keep moving toward the end zone.
Achane has 10 carries for 51 yards and Tagovailoa is 16-of-20 for 158 yards.
Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill suffered a gruesome leg injury in the third quarter of Monday night’s game against the Jets.
Per the ESPN broadcast, Hill has been taken to a local hospital for further evaluation. The update included video of Hill in a wheelchair, with his left leg immobilized.
It was a very graphic injury. While each network has to make its own decision as to whether a replay of a serious injury should be displayed, the Hill injury is difficult to watch.
A precise diagnosis is coming. It would be a surprise, based on the images of the play, if Hill returns to the field this season.
As usual, however, the injured player was carted off, and the game kept on going. The injury should nevertheless serve as a stark reminder of the risks every pro football player assumes, every time he takes the field.
The Jets have found the end zone.
Quarterback Justin Fields dropped back to pass on a fourth down near midfield and had to scramble as pressure flooded the pocket. Fields reversed course and sprinted around the left end of the line for a 43-yard touchdown that cut Miami’s lead to 17-10 with 9:23 left to play in the third quarter.
Fields now has 73 rushing yards on the night and the Jets have gained 167 yards on the ground as a team. Three lost fumbles, including one on the opening kickoff of the second half, kept them from doing anything with that success until Fields broke free.
They’ll now try to hold onto the football and keep a Dolphins offense that’s missing Tyreek Hill from putting any more points on the board.
The Dolphins extended their lead over the Jets early in the third quarter, but they lost wide receiver Tyreek Hill on the way to putting points on the board.
Hill’s hurt his left leg while he was making a catch near the sideline on a third down and ESPN captured video that showed it bent in directions that legs are not meant to bend. Hill was quickly loaded onto a cart and taken off the field while receiving good wishes from members of both teams.
More word will come from the Dolphins about Hill’s condition, but it did not look like an injury that he will recover from anytime soon.
The Dolphins continued their drive and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa hit tight end Darren Waller for a touchdown a few plays later. It’s Waller’s second touchdown catch of the game and the Dolphins now lead 17-3 with 11:33 left in the third quarter.
The Dolphins’ bid for their first win of the season is in good shape at halftime in Miami.
Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa hit tight end Darren Waller for a touchdown and the Dolphins defense forced a pair of Jets fumbles that ended the visiting team’s first two offensive possessions. The Jets were able to put together enough of a drive in the final minute to set up a 58-yard field goal try for Nick Folk.
The veteran hit the kick, which is the longest of his career, and the Dolphins lead 10-3 at the break as a result.
Waller’s touchdown was his first since joining the Dolphins and Tagovailoa finished the half 11-of-15 for 115 yards. Tyreek Hill has five catches for 57 yards and Jaylen Waddle had a 25-yard catch to set up the Waller score.
The Jets moved the ball well on their first possession, but running back Braelon Allen lost a fumble just outside the end zone and the Dolphins put together a 15-play, 96-yard drive in response. Quarterback Justin Fields also lost a fumble on a sack by Tyrel Dodson and the two turnovers have negated the positives the Jets could have gained by picking up 115 rushing yards.
Allen later hurt his knee and has been ruled out for the rest of the night. Cornerback Michael Carter also left the game to be evaluated for a head injury.
