There has been plenty of speculation over the past several weeks regarding the names that ultimately will appear on the list of candidates to replace former NFLPA Executive Director Gene Upshaw.
For the first time, a “real” list is emerging.
According to The Sirius Blitz with Adam Schein and John Riggins, the NFLPA and executive search firm Reilly Partners have compiled the following names for a fluid, early list of possible candidates: Bruce Laird, Jason Belzer, Jamir Miller, Mike Kenn, Don Hasselbeck, Troy Vincent, George Martin, Robert Smith, Clark Gaines, Bart Oates, Harris Barton, and Nolan Harrison.
All of these candidates are former NFL players.
Vincent remains the most controversial of the bunch, given that he had a falling out with Upshaw before the long-time union chief died after a brief bout with pancreatic cancer in August.
Expect plenty of politicking and boxing-out over the coming weeks and month; given the pay, the prestige, and the power, this is the best job that any former player can have, other than perhaps Commissioner.
