Lions defensive tackle Nick Fairley’s DUI trial in Alabama continues today, after he was able to use a variation of the “it’s not my weed defense,” in court yesterday.
According to Michael Dumas for the Detroit Free Press, Fairley’s then-girlfriend/now-fiancee said that the red solo cup of alcohol in the car was hers, and that Fairley only had one drink the night of the May 2012 arrest.
Fatima Alhassan told the jury in Mobile, Ala., that Fairley had consumed his one drink hours before he was pulled over.
Alabama State Trooper Carl Johnson disputed that, saying Fairley failed three field sobriety tests at the 1 a.m. traffic stop. Johnson also said at the time that Fairley admitted the red cup was his.
Closing arguments will begin this morning, and the outcome could impact Fairley’s future. He’s hitting the free agent market next month, and would face a standard two-game suspension if convicted of the DUI.
