Five years after Pats coach Bill Belichick did a sideline group hug with offensive coordinator Charlie Weis and defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel at Super Bowl XXXIX, the men who left the nest feathered with three Lombardi Trophies are getting together again.
According to Vinny DiTrani of NorthJersey.com, Crennel is expected to return from a year off and pick the Chiefs over the Giants.
After the 2004 season, Weis became the head coach at Notre Dame and Crennel was hired by the Browns.
In Kansas City, they rejoin former Pats V.P. of player personnel Scott Pioli, who became the G.M. of the Chiefs a year ago.
Though some thought Weis would return to New England, the Chiefs have a greater need for his services. Pats quarterback Tom Brady is established; he’s essentially operating as a co-offensive coordinator. In Kansas City, Matt Cassel is still developing and Weis, who left roughly three months before Cassel was drafted, will get a chance to do with Cassel what Weis helped do with Brady -- with the same offense.
Under Crennel, the Chiefs will continue to use the 3-4 defense; the challenge will be to continue to get the right personnel for it, given that the team previously used a 4-3 alignment.
