Should Redskins have cut Cooley earlier?

After he was abruptly cut by the Redskins on Tuesday, tight end Chris Cooley took the high road. By waiting until late August to sever ties, the Redskins arguably took the low road.

That was the sentiment espoused by former Redskins linebacker LaVar Arrington on Tuesday afternoon, when I joined LaVar and Chad Dukes for a segment about the situation on their D.C. radio show. And that was the topic of the opening chunk of Wednesday’s PFT Live.

Yes, it makes business sense to unveil a take-a-pay-cut-or-take-a-hike ultimatum as long as possible, since the player will be far less likely to get more money than what the team is offering elsewhere. No, it’s not necessarily the best way to treat a valued employee.
