The 49ers won’t be using a restricted free agent tender on tight end Jake Tonges, but he will be staying with the team.
Tonges’s agent Steve Caric told multiple reporters that the tight end has agreed to a two-year deal. Tonges is set to make $8 million under the terms of the deal with $5.5 million in guaranteed money.
Tonges entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Bears in 2022 and signed to the 49ers’ practice squad in 2023. He saw his first game action with the team the next year, but did not catch any passes in his 16 appearances.
An early-season injury for George Kittle opened the door to a bigger role last season and Tonges caught 34 passes for 293 yards and five touchdowns in the regular season. He also had six catches for 73 yards in the playoffs.
The 49ers are bringing running back Patrick Taylor back for the 2026 season.
Taylor’s agents at Equity Sports announced that the back has signed a new contract with the NFC West club. They did not disclose any of the terms of Taylor’s new deal.
Taylor joined the 49ers in 2024 after spending his first three seasons with the Packers. He ran 39 times for 183 yards and a touchdown in 13 games that season, but spent all of last season on injured reserve.
Christian McCaffrey will return as the top back for the Niners in 2026. Isaac Guerendo and Jordan James are also under contract while Brian Robinson is out of contract.
The 49ers have added some depth to their offensive line.
Former Eagles offensive lineman Brett Toth has agreed to a one-year contract with the 49ers, according to Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia.
Toth played both guard and center for the Eagles last year, playing in all 17 games with four starts. Adding depth to the offensive line was a priority for 49ers General Manager John Lynch, and Toth fits what the 49ers were looking for.
Originally an undrafted rookie out of Army in 2018, Toth has had three different stints with the Eagles and also spent time with the Cardinals and Panthers.
The Cowboys are receiving calls about the availability of defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa, Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
The 49ers are one of the teams to call the Cowboys, per Harris.
San Francisco hired former Cowboys defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus as the assistant head coach of defense.
Odighizuwa signed a four-year, $80 million contract last offseason before the Cowboys traded for defensive tackles Kenny Clark and Quinnen Williams. On Tuesday, they signed nose tackle Otito Ogbonnia.
Although the Cowboys restructured several deals, Odighizuwa’s contract was not touched.
He has a cap number of $20.75 million for this season.
The Titans are signing defensive tackle Jordan Elliott to a two-year, $8 million deal that includes $500,000 in incentives, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
It reunites Elliott with Robert Saleh in Tennessee. The two were together in San Francisco last season when Saleh was the 49ers’ defensive coordinator.
Elliott entered the NFL as a third-round pick of the Browns in 2020. He spent his first four seasons in Cleveland, appearing in 66 games.
As a free agent in 2024, Elliott signed a two-year deal with the 49ers.
In 16 games last season, Elliott totaled 31 tackles, two quarterback hits and a pass defensed.
Elliott appeared in 97 games in his career, recording 148 tackles, five sacks and five passes defensed.
