After a slow start to his Manchester United career, Memphis Depay has been relegated to the bench.

United paid $40 million this summer to bring the 21-year-old winger to Old Trafford, but he has not featured in any of the past four Premier League fixtures, replaced by homegrown product Jesse Lingard.

Memphis has scored just one goal in league play for United after leading the Eredivisie with 22 goals last season with PSV Eindhoven.

Speaking ahead of Manchester United’s match at Watford on Saturday, manager Louis van Gaal said that he expects more from his big summer signing.

Of course [I expect more] because otherwise he would still be in the team.

But players in that age are not consistent. I don’t have a quarrel with the player - it’s a matter of form.

He is always looking very good in training. But when you change the player then the other player has a chance. And that other player is Jesse Lingard. And he played very good.

Lingard has impressed since replacing Memphis, scoring his first goal for the club and earning himself a call-up to the England national team. However, Memphis could see his way back into the lineup against Watford, as United is battling injuries.

Wayne Rooney, Anthony Martial and Marouane Fellaini have all been ruled out of the Watford match, as Van Gaal has been forced to call up some youth players into the first team. Depay will likely get a chance to win back the confidence of his manager, and will look to put in a strong performance at Vicarage Road.
