Metro New York is reporting that Mix Diskerud’s name has been tabled as a possible target for New York City Football Club.
Neither the most reliable news publication nor an insider source on all things soccer, Metro sources claim that the expansion side are interested in the United States international and that moves could be made over the next few months.
Diskerud plays his club soccer for Norweigian side Rosenborg, who currently sit 7th in the Eliteserien table but just four matches into the 2014 season. That season will conclude in November 2014 at which time Diskerud’s contract with the club will expire, leaving him in prime position to make the move stateside.
A natural stumbling block for the deal could be Diskerud’s demand for top wages, meaning a designated player contract from NYCFC. Those precious three deals, however, will likely be earmarked for marquee names of international status (The Dream: Zlatan Ibrahimovic). That said, don’t be surprised if Major League Soccer employs some sort of creative contracting or rule change - perhaps increasing the number of DP slots - to ensure that NYCFC have a number of their desired targets.
Assuming a deal could be worked out Diskerud’s fluid style of play would fit nicely within the attacking philosophy of NYCFC coach Jason Kreis, who encourages dynamic, interchanging movements and versatility among midfielders. Since his debut with the National Team in 2010, Diskerud has made 17 appearances, scoring two goals.
